Hamish Mellow

I am currently a Part 2 Mechanical Engineering Assistance Centre Mentor. Each week I attend scheduled meetings to help 2nd year Mechanical Students with any difficulties they may have wit their courses.

My time spent as a summer student within Mercury’s internship program saw me involved in a host of sub-professional Mechanical Engineering work. In the report attached below I have detailed each of the projects I was tasked with. I was based in the Hamilton office but also had the opportunity to visit several of Mercury’s sites and offices throughout the central North Island. My role as a summer student within the Hydro Mechanical team saw my projects focused on the operation of the Hydro generation sites along the Waikato River. As part of a team within such a large and diverse company I was exposed to several new working environments, procedures, and situations. I learnt so much from this experience in both a sub-professional Mechanical Engineering sense, as well as on a personal level. My understanding of the communication, organization, and professionalism required to run and maintain a large, essential, and high performing company has grown immensely. I was pushed to look further than just what the numbers were telling me and look at the whole picture and relate the data and figures to what is happening on site. Furthermore, I am aware of what it takes and the possibilities ahead of us to create sustainable engineering practices to supply essential services such as energy to New Zealanders across the country.

As part of my role as Operations Assistant I was tasked with assisting in the smooth operation of the workshop. This included stock and supply management, invoicing and administrative tasks using the ORION software as well as designing and CAD'ing several parts using Rhino. A written report on my experience and role at FC Boats has been uploaded for greater detail.

My time at Fulton Hogan Waikato over the summer of 2019/2020 was spent as a laborer as a member of the road construction crew. I worked on the completion of the Huntly bypass where I operated heavy machinery, conducted quality assessments, as well as some surveying.
