undergraduate assistant - office of service learning
university of missouri
The University of Missouri's Office of Service Learning coordinates volunteerism-based coursework and internships at roughly 200 local non-profit organizations and Missouri State government offices. Many service learning courses are designated by the University as "writing intensive"; my role in these classrooms was to critically evaluate papers written by the students and provide constructive feedback regarding the quality of both their written communication and reflections on their experiences as an intern. I have also been engaged in the recruitment process for future internship programs. This includes conducting interviews with internship applicants, recommending placement sites that would mutually benefit the agencies' and the students' goals, and assisting with placement orientation meetings.

project development intern
voluntary action center
The Voluntary Action Center is a non-profit agency that provides emergency assistance to low-income families. During my second semester with the agency, I developed and implemented a program model that incorporates service learning opportunities for art students into a plan for applying evidence-based design and community artwork to reduce stress and anxiety among clients visiting the VAC facilities. I have been responsible for coordinating the involvement of roughly seventy-five student participants from classrooms and student organizations at the University of Missouri and Stephens College. I have also been responsible for the creation of an intern-specific orientation manual, developing curriculum for group training sessions, and providing professional development opportunities for interns and volunteers.

social services intern
voluntary action center
During my first semester at the Voluntary Action Center, I worked directly with low-income clients as a social services intern. My role at the organization required me to interview clients to determine eligibility for services, perform needs assessments, provide direct assistance, maintain accurate case records for each client household, offer information relevant to the client's needs, and provide referrals for social services available at other local agencies. Services provided included assistance with transportation, healthcare, employment, youth enrichment, child safety, homelessness prevention, emergency housing, and rent assistance. I also assisted with the coordination of the VAC Christmas Program, through which sponsors from the community provide low-income families with a holiday meal and gifts. I was involved in interviewing applicants, the selection process, processing sponsor commitments, and matching individual families with their sponsors.

Phoenix Programs provides residential and outpatient detoxification, rehabilitation, and counseling services for adults and adolescences who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction or abuse. As a service learning student at Phoenix Programs, I worked under a substance abuse counselor and assisted with psychiatric care coordination and basic office tasks. I wrote vouchers for clients' prescription medications and laboratory tests, maintained voucher logs, placed appointment reminder calls for psychiatric patients, and created and implemented an organizational system for the counselor's library of resources. I also had the opportunity to observe individual counseling sessions, group counseling sessions, and recovery education classes about co-occurring mental health issues.

customer service - sales associate
tiger spirit
My primary responsibility was to attentively correspond with customers to resolve concerns or complaints regarding products or services received. I also trained new employees and supervised staff members on the sales floor.

urban outreach intern
youth with a mission
The Youth With a Mission internship program included three months of training which was followed by three months of outreach in the field, all of which focused on serving Britain's primary urban populations: low-income families and children, South Asian immigrants, the homeless, and at-risk youth. During my internship I participated in event planning, community outreach, mentorship programs, multicultural events, running day camps for children, speaking at religious education classes in public elementary schools, feeding the homeless, and hosting safe-alternative events for youth. I served as a member of an international team with students from five different continents; we had the opportunity to partner with individuals, non-profit organizations, religious groups, community centers, homeless shelters, and city councils across England and Wales
