"Estimating Demand with Attitude: How Feelings and Opinions Affect Consumer Choice" • Attitudinal data contain subjective responses that provide important insight on how people make decisions. For example, consumers might purchase a particular brand of computer based on their overall perception of the company, buy diet foods when they are unhappy with their weight, or choose to smoke more frequently whenever they feel stressed. • Several studies incorporate these data as explanatory variables, but the theoretical model of this paper explains that these specifications produce inaccurate parameter estimates due to a simultaneity problem. • This research develops an empirical model that jointly estimates the consumer’s purchasing decisions and attitudinal responses as dependent variables while accounting for unobserved heterogeneity. • An empirical application shows that this method produces more accurate and efficient parameter estimates and predictions of consumer behavior.
