Germán Mora Martín, PhD
Data Scientist @ SCALAI
About
Germán Mora Martín received the B.Sc degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Cerdanyola del Vallès, Spain in 2017. In his B.Sc Thesis, he contributed in developing a novel high-throughput technique to optimize organic solar cells. He received the M.Sc in Physics, Specialization in Optics and Photonics, Signals and Imaging from Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, France and the M.Sc in Optics and Photonics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany in 2019 from Europhotonics, an Erasmus Mundus program. In his M.Sc Thesis, he contributed in the design of a flexible waveguide film for guiding light in smart objects. He joined the University of Edinburgh in February 2020 as a PhD student under the supervision of Istvan Gyongy, working on deep learning-enhanced 3D direct time-of-flight imaging. He continues since September 2023 as a Research Associate working on single-photon technologies for underwater imaging.

Experience

Research Associate: AI & Computer Vision
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
• Developing an AI-based, object detection tool for 3D seafloor exploration (Python, Tensorflow). • Developing MATLAB/Python software for extraction, processing, and analysis of LIDAR sensor data.

PhD Researcher: AI & Computer Vision & LIDAR
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
• Developed MATLAB/Python software for the generation and processing of robust, synthetic datasets from images/videos in Unreal Engine, achieving x5 faster development of AI applications. • Developed a series of real-time AI models for AR/VR and automotive LIDAR systems using Python (Tensorflow/Keras): 1. High-speed, object detection with > 90% accuracy from image data. 2. Human action recognition with > 80% accuracy from video data. 3. Super-resolution and denoising from video data. • Collaborated in successful AI projects for 3D pose estimation from a commercial 3D sensor (published in Science Advances journal) and identification and segmentation of drones. • Negotiated and secured funding for 2 PhD projects in collaboration with Sony Group Corporation.

Internship: Technology Transfer
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
• Performed intellectual property (IP) due diligence, conducted patentability assessments, executed market analyses, and designed commercialisation strategies for novel technologies emerging from the University of Edinburgh.

Internship: Computer Vision & Data Analyst
Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
• Utilised a computer vision-based object detection algorithm (YOLOv5) to accurately quantify objects of interest from 360-degree images captured in industrial settings for asset digitisation. • Conducted data analysis with Python (Numpy, Pandas) to identify and filter 80% of duplicated objects from multiple images and different viewpoints for robust and fast asset digitisation.
