Currently delivering lecture programs online to support Clinical Instrument Decontamination staff working in Irish Hospitals and Primary Care Centers. Courses being delivered include: 3 separate Minor Awards (1 academic year (September to May)) in; Endoscope Decontamination and Dental Instrument Dentamination and Surgical Instrument Decontamination. An online Certificate in Microbiology (September to December) aimed at improving Decontamination service staff knowledge of Microbiological Control is also part of the programs being delivered. These programs are substituents of the BSc in Decontamination Management. All of the above programs are offered at the Technological University Dublin. I am interested in progressing a global model of Decontamination workforce education with interested universities around the world. I have lectured on a wide variety of undergraduate and post-graduate programs in Ireland and in China (at the Nanjing University of Technology). I have served as an External Examiner for a number of Irish Universities & led research in the development of rapid PCR based diagnostic technologies for microbial pathogens, analytical studies on the microflora of illicit narcotics with the Irish State Forensic Science Laboratory and the role of heat-shock protein in muscle recovery following exercise with University College Dublin and the University of Ulster. I have contributed to a column in the Irish Examiner Newspaper on Avian Influenza & appeared on national broadcast media services (TV and Radio) as a specialist scientific contributor. I have served on a technical advisory group to the Ministry of Health. I have spoken at a wide range of national and international conferences on microbiological risks associated with reusable medical devices. I am keenly interested in extending applied microbiological university educational programs nationally & internationally. I am especially interested in supporting health service workforces (involved in the routine cleaning, disinfection & sterilisation of clinical instruments & medical devices) to access such University Educational opportunities while they work & thereby improve the quality of instrument decontamination services to patients across the globe. .

My role includes lecturing, and new course design and validation. Specialisations include Microbiology, Biosecurity, Clinical Instrument Decontamination and Contamination Control in pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing industries and healthcare facilities. Most recently, I lead the development and provision of online degree, certificate and minor certificate courses for healthcare workers in Irish Health Service Hospitals and Primary Care Centers. These courses are aimed at providing University Accredited CPD educational opportunity, up to and including degree level programs in the decontamination and management of reuseable clinical instruments; surgical instruments, dental instruments, flexible and rigid endoscopes and ultrasound probes. Formerly I championed the development of a National Certificate program in Good Manufacturing Practice with 11 Irish Institutes of Technology, supporting workforce education for the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Industry across the Ireland. I have also co-developed and co- delivered the BSc in Pharmaceutical Science (International) in collaboration with the Nanjing Technological University (Nanjing Tech) in China. Along with Dr C. Murphy of TU Dublin I proposed the establishment of the BSc in DNA Technology and Forensic Science and BSc in Sports Science and Health, and the establishment of the National Pharmaceutical Education Centre at TU Dublin -Tallaght Campus with Dr. T. Creedon and Mr. J. McGowan. My research interests have included the development of rapid PCR diagnostics to detect toxic- infectious bacterial agents, the microbiological analysis of drug substances in collaboration with the State Forensic Science Laboratory, the impact of heat shock protein on muscle recovery following exercise, the development of a biotic nitrogen fixing fertiliser and photo-oxidative processes to degrade antibiotic residues in waste waters.
