Primarily a hobby photographer, I also sell to businesses and individuals, and regularly donate pieces for charity auctions.

After hiring my successor as PNNL's CIO and with an eye toward retirement in late 2013, I contracted with the U.S. Department of Energy CIO to serve as an advisor on IT strategic planning and cyber security for the Department. I worked 25% of the time at the DOE's headquarters in Washington D.C., and the remainder of the time from my home office in Washington state.

Accountable to the Laboratory Director to continuously improve the deployment, use, management and protection of information resources to increase research productivity and operational effectiveness of PNNL. Responsibilities included: - Serving as the principal advisor to the Laboratory’s senior management on Information Technology. - Maintaining a strategic plan that links IT planning and investment decisions to DOE-wide and PNNL-specific missions and goals, and establishes overarching IT goals, objectives, and measures. - Maintaining an Enterprise Architecture (EA) for the life-cycle management of information resources and related investments funded by or operated for PNNL. - Determining PNNL IT investment strategies and priorities, and monitoring effective control of the cost, schedule, and performance of IT investments and corresponding projects. - Protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information resources stewarded by PNNL. - Representing PNNL interests concerning information technology to the Department of Energy and to other federal and state agencies. The scope of managed work included PNNL’s computing and communications infrastructure, business information systems, cyber security, records management, and technical library services and exceeded $45 million annually (2013 dollars) and 215 staff. Under my leadership, PNNL was recognized as a CIO 100 award winner in 2008 and 2009 and was named to the InformationWeek 500 five consecutive years. In 2009, InformationWeek named me to its inaugural compilation of top CIOs in federal, state and local government: The Government CIO 50 and I was renamed to the list in its second edition released in 2011.

Responsible for planning, implementing, maintaining, and operating information systems that are deployed to enhance research project performance, ES&H assurance, and the management of the Laboratory's business and assets. Merged two groups to manage a staff of 40-50 systems developers.

Various strategic leadership and business development assignments: helped to establish the “standards-based management system” approach to Laboratory operations later adopted at multiple DOE National Laboratories operated by Battelle and served as first Information Resources Management System owner; led an initiative to increase PNNL’s commercial IT business; developed a proposal and plan to form a new Battelle business unit to engineer and market Knowledge Management software products and services; wrote a proposal and was awarded a $1 million contract to develop an Internet-based information system for the agrochemical industry; conducted an assessment of IT implementation and management at the Brookhaven National Laboratory; developed an Enterprise Architecture to guide IT investment planning.

Responsible for modernization and upgrade of PNNL’s computing, data communications and management information systems infrastructure: implemented a high performance computer network and distributed computing environment serving more than 3800 scientists, engineers, managers, and administrators – from Washington state to Washington D.C.; instituted Internet access for PNNL and, later, for the DOE Hanford site; conceived, promoted, and helped to implement a program to provide Internet access to local K-12 educators and students; created a scientific computing environment supporting a spectrum of computing resources from Macintosh and UNIX workstations to supercomputers; implemented a distributed business computing infrastructure to support a new generation of cost saving workflow and management decision support applications.

Responsible for system management, system programming, network engineering, data center operations, and design and implementation of computer security countermeasures. Worked both hands-on and managed a group of ~12 systems engineers. This group was founded based on my unsolicited white paper identifying efficiencies that could be achieved by centralizing management of PNNL's distributed data centers.

Day-to-day management of a scientific data processing center, including operating system software maintenance and enhancement.

Developed a clinic information system for the University of Washington School of Dentistry. The system was used to track and link patients, patient procedures, and student dentists in the school’s clinic. The system was used, in part, to ensure students completed the requisite types and number of procedures required for graduation.
