Gavin Fry

Breadth of experience in environmental compliance and permitting, storm water sampling and reporting procedures, sustainability reporting, and office resource for air dispersion modeling for a variety of industries. Serves as an office resource for climate and meteorological data analyses. Working knowledge of QGIS, proficiency in BREEZE AERMOD, and working knowledge of several federal and state environmental regulations.

In the spring of 2024, I was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar for the state of New Hampshire. This honor recognizes my commitment to a career in public service and research on socioeconomic vulnerabilities associated with natural disasters in vulnerable regions of the United States.

Conducted several independent research projects including analyzing extreme precipitation events in the Northeast United States, examining severe weather outbreaks in the Mid-South U.S., and performing a case-study of the December 10th-11th severe weather outbreak in the Mississippi Delta. Conducted a two-term long senior honors thesis in the Earth Sciences department at Dartmouth College analyzing "Meteorological and Sociological Vulnerabilities of Severe Storms in the Mid-South U.S."

I worked with Vermont Emergency Management to update their Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). Specifically, I identified barriers for marginalized groups to engage in the planning process. Helped identify ways for marginalized and underrepresented groups to become more involved in the planning process.

Student admissions blogger responsible for crafting weekly blog posts for the Dartmouth admissions website.

Calculus II tutor responsible for preparing and teaching course material at a one-on-one level to undergraduate students at Dartmouth College.

Employed by The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College to carry out daily weather observations at the Shattuck Observatory on campus. Maintained daily weather records since August of 2021.

Student researcher in the "Ice Core" lab at Dartmouth College under the supervision of Dr. Erich Osterberg and lab manager Jacob Chaliff.

Conducted a rigorous research project analyzing the public's ability to interpret and act on severe weather warnings. Worked hand-in-hand with NWS personnel, sociologists, and broadcast meteorologists to better understand the effectiveness of weather messaging, credibility, and trust.

During the summer of 2022, I worked as a student intern for the Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey. I gained considerable experience with the python coding language using large datasets. I examined the large-scale circulation pattern tied to extreme precipitation occurrences in the Northeast United States under Dr. Bor-ting Jong and Dr. Tom Delworth.

Conducted a one-term research project scrutinizing energy systems over the Great Plains states and their vulnerability to winter storms with particular emphasis on improving wintertime energy demand forecasts.

Student volunteer with the National Weather Service in Memphis, Tennessee. Created and presentation a Mid-South Tornado climatology study that updated the NWS-Memphis Tornado database. Excellent experience for coding and data analysis skills.
