Ganesh Gupta
Co-Founder & Director @ JalViks
About
My work sits at the intersection of academic research and practical application. As a PhD researcher at IIT Bombay and Director at JalViks, I am focused on bridging the gap between complex climate data and daily farming decisions. The core of my work involves taking global weather models and downscaling them into hyper-local, actionable insights that can actually be used on the ground. Whether it is coding Python pipelines for data analysis, exploring how Large Language Models (LLMs) can simplify technical advisories, or installing soil sensors in villages, the goal remains the same: to build reliable systems that reduce uncertainty for farmers. It is a challenging, hands-on journey from the lab to the land, driven by the need to create technology that is as resilient as the people who use it.

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Description: Designed and deployed a comprehensive operational tool for power generation forecasting, facilitating data-driven decisions for energy stakeholders. Key Responsibilities: Full-Stack Development: Architected an interactive dashboard using Python Dash to visualize complex forecasting data, backed by a robust PostgreSQL database for efficient handling of time-series data. Pipeline Engineering: Built an automated forecasting pipeline that integrates and compares multiple predictive models to ensure optimal accuracy in power output predictions. DevOps & Deployment: Containerized the entire application using Docker, ensuring consistent environments and seamless deployment for operational use. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and students to translate theoretical forecasting research into a functional, production-ready software tool. Stakeholder Delivery: Enabled stakeholders to access real-time power forecasts through the web interface, supporting grid management and operational planning.

Project Research Associate
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Project Role: Project Lead & Researcher (GESH - IIT Bombay) Location: Kaledhon Village, Maharashtra Key Responsibilities & Major Duties: Community Engagement & Network Building: Established a dedicated farmers' network in Kaledhon Village, fostering direct collaboration between the research team and the agricultural community. Digital Literacy Initiatives: Conducted "Digital Awareness" workshops to train farmers on using smartphone-based agricultural tools, bridging the digital divide and ensuring high adoption rates for new technologies. IoT & Hardware Deployment: Led the site-specific installation and calibration of soil moisture sensors across pilot farms to capture hyper-local hydrological data. Product Development (Jalviks Alpha): Designed and deployed the Alpha version of the Jalviks App, successfully integrating real-time sensor feeds with upcoming weather forecasts to provide actionable advisories. Field Validation: Monitored the end-to-end performance of the decision support system (DSS) in real-world conditions, gathering user feedback to refine the app's UI/UX for rural users.

Visiting Researcher
United States
"During my tenure as a Visiting Researcher at the USDA-ARS, I focused on advanced crop modeling techniques using the Geo-EPIC framework. Under the guidance of Dr. Varaprasad Bandaru, I received specialized training in calibrating biophysical models for complex agricultural systems. This expertise serves as the technical foundation for my current PhD research, where I am adapting these global modeling standards to the local context of Nashik, Maharashtra. Specifically, we are implementing the Geo-EPIC model to simulate viticulture systems, aiming to provide precision advisory services for grape farmers."

Education

Climate change
AI/ML for Climate Downscaling: Engineering advanced Machine Learning models to downscale coarse global weather data into high-resolution, farm-scale forecasts. Applying AI/ML techniques to ensure hyper-local accuracy for rainfall and temperature predictions. Generative AI for Agriculture (LLM): Building and fine-tuning a specialized Large Language Model (LLM) to function as an interactive advisory interface. The goal is to translate complex meteorological and agronomic data into simple, actionable natural language advisories for farmers in vernacular languages. End-to-End DSS Architecture: Designing the system framework that synthesizes multi-source data—including satellite imagery, IoT sensor feeds, and weather models—to generate timely alerts for irrigation and crop management.
