I use structural biological analysis and in vitro assays to understand how a protein called cohesin interacts with DNA. During cell division, cohesin is the protein complex that holds sister chromatids (replicated chromosomes) together until the onset of cell division, when each copy goes to one daughter cell. Cohesin is required for proper chromosome segregation, DNA repair, gene expression, and overall maintenance of genomic integrity. A better understanding of cohesin will provide important insights into chromosome organization and biology, as well as shed light onto the pathology of cancer.
