Franck Moreau

I was born in France in Macon, South Burgundy. I grew up in the Beaujolais, watching winemakers surrounded vineyards where my palate for wine was developed. In my career, I undertook extensive travel to improve my knowledge of wines. I have traveled repeatedly to Germany and Italy, and spent 4 months travelling throughout Chile, Argentina, USA and New Zealand where I continually expanded my knowledge of both Old and New World wines. My passion for wine led me all the way to Australia. In September 2004, I commenced work as Head Sommelier for Pier Restaurant Sydney, and in October 2005, I joined Merivale as Group Sommelier where I still am today. During my time at Merivale, some of my achievements include: In November 2009, I was awarded second place at the prestigious Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI), the first competition for the Best Sommelier of Asia-Oceania competition in Osaka, Japan. April 2012, I won the Best Sommelier of Asia-Oceania competition in South Korea, organised by the prestigious Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, then went back to represent Australia at the Meilleur Sommelier du Monde competition this time held in Tokyo, Japan in April 2013. The event is known as the Sommelier Olympics and was organised by A.S.I. I competed against 60 candidates from 51 countries. After 4 days of competition I was named as one of the top 7 sommeliers in the world. Awarded the ‘Hall of Fame’ from WINE Gourmet traveller in 2014, 2015 & 2016 for involvement in the wine industry. I am privileged to be the Director of the Burgundy Celebration, which is 5 days of events promoting Burgundy in Sydney and Melbourne. I coordinate the Court of Master Sommelier Oceania courses (Australia), Vice President of Sommelier Australia who I’m also in charge of the New South Wales Chapter. I'm Head judge for la Chaine des Rôtisseurs in Australia. Above all else, I'm passionate about wine, people and continuous development!
