As an independent non-executive director of the Tasmanian Division, Fergus volunteers his time as a small contribution to the Heart Foundation's work to save lives and improve health through funding world-class cardiovascular research, providing guidelines for health professionals, informing the public and assisting people with cardiovascular disease. While the Heart Foundation's work over the past five decades has helped reduce the number of deaths, cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke and blood vessel disease) remains one of Australia’s most devastating health problems. Fergus is was the Chair of the Tasmanian Finance, Risk, Audit and Compliance Committee until May 2018. The Heart Foundation restructured State and Territory boards to become a unified legal entity, with all Tasmanian directors concluding their term in May 2018. The Hobart office remains, with the Tasmanian CEO and Staff continuing to have a strong local presence.

Forest Enterprises Australia Ltd (FEA) was a vertically integrated forestry and sawmilling business listed on the ASX, with 75,000 hectares of plantation under management. FEA also supplied sawn timber and wood fibre to domestic and export markets.

The Commercial Manager role facilitates strategic planning, financial analysis, forecasting and business improvement, in order to achieve corporate strategy.

Ruralco is an ASX listed company with revenue of over $1bn per annum. Ruralco operates through a national footprint of businesses that specialise in providing rural customers with products and services in merchandise, fertiliser, seed, wool, livestock, real estate, risk management, water, grain, finance and insurance. My responsibilities included capital management, corporate finance, buisness development, financial reporting, tax planning and compliance, treasury, governance, information systems and indirect procurement.

Group Commercial Manager for Australia's largest integrated hardwood and softwood forest products company. Listed on the ASX, Gunns was in the ASX100 index and had a market capitalisation of $1bn at the time. Part of a small executive management team, I had a key role in the integration of the Boral Timber Tasmania business and then the acquisition of the North Forest Products in 2001 following Rio Tinto’s acquisition of North Ltd. I was an active member of a small team that prepared an equity prospectus as part of funding arrangements.

I was responsible for the commercial aspects Boral’s Tasmanian Timber and NSW sawmill residue businesses that exported wood fibre to customers in Asia. Responsibilities included provision of quality commercial advice, accurate reporting, management of internal controls, accurate product costings, budgeting, overview business systems and raising financial awareness across the business unit.
