Emma Stolinas
Graduate Career Advisor @ MSU Office of Graduate Career Development
About
Hi! My name is Emma Stolinas, and I am a master's student in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU). Since August 2025, I have also been working as the Master's-Level Career Advisor in the MSU Graduate School's Office of Graduate Career Development. I am currently searching for a full-time position in career services at a college or university. I graduated from Penn State University in December 2023 with a bachelor's degree in Geosciences. Throughout my time at Penn State, I was involved in research in igneous petrology and geochemistry and planned to pursue a career in research. When I came to MSU in August 2024, I expected to continue on the career path that I began at Penn State, but I quickly realized that my strengths and interests were calling me in a different direction. I found myself wishing I’d had someone in undergrad who encouraged me to think more intentionally about my career path, and after spending some time reflecting on my goals and values, I realized that I want to be that person for others. This led me to pivot into student affairs, where I could directly support students on their professional journeys. Within my first year of grad school, I completely overhauled my career plans to align with my new purpose: changing my research focus, enrolling in education courses, switching from a PhD to an MS program, and seeking out professional development opportunities in academic and career advising. In my final year at MSU, I have been immersed in the world of career advising as a Graduate Career Advisor. In this role, I provide one-on-one career guidance to other graduate students from all academic programs at MSU, design and deliver career education programming, and manage online communications for the office. In my appointments, as well as my workshops and presentations, I guide students through the processes of resume/CV/cover letter writing, preparing for interviews, networking, job searching, and career exploration. While I work to gain experience in career services, I am also writing my master's thesis, which I will defend in Spring 2026. My project, advised by Dr. Julie Libarkin, utilizes drawings made by first-year undergrads to understand the ideas that they have about careers, comparing those ideas to real job data, and exploring how this information can be used to better support college student career development.
