Emma Ashford

I am a a senior fellow with the Reimagining US Grand Strategy program at the Stimson Center, where my work focuses on questions of grand strategy, international security, and the future of US foreign policy. I was previously a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, and a research fellow in defense and foreign policy at the Cato Institute. My writing has been featured in publications such as Foreign Affairs, the Texas National Security Review, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and War on the Rocks, among others. I also write a biweekly column -- "It’s Debatable" -- for Foreign Policy magazine. My first book, Oil, the State, and War: The Foreign Policies of Petrostates, was published by Georgetown University Press in June 2022. I'm a nonresident fellow at the Modern War Institute at West Point, an adjunct assistant professor in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University, and a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

I'm a resident senior fellow with the New American Engagement Initiative in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, which focuses on challenging the prevailing assumptions governing US foreign policy and seeks to develop effective solutions that preserve America’s security and prosperity. My work focuses on questions of grand strategy, international security, energy, and the future of US foreign policy. I specialize in the politics of Russia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Produced Policy Analysis study on Arab state involvement in Syrian Civil War and rise of ISIS. Organised policy forums and other events. Produced opinion pieces assessing U.S. foreign policy and making recommendations, and commented for print and broadcast media on same.

Prepared and taught three discussion sections of twenty students each (per semester) in conjunction with professor's lecture series. Facilitated student discussion of class concepts and relevant historical events. Graded assignments, monitored student participation and performance and met individually with students to explain difficult concepts and provide feedback on assignments.

Collaborated with Dr. Peter Furia on quantitative analysis of public opinion data from various countries. Reconstructed and augmented large-N dataset with newly available sources.

Assisted senior scholars with research on various projects. Investigated and created comprehensive timeline of 2008 War in Georgia from openly available sources for CSIS website. Researched and created a variety of informative and opinion articles on energy politics in the Caspian Sea.

Collaborated with Dr. Yuson Jung in her ongoing qualitative research on Eastern Europe. Sourced and summarized relevant scholarly works for review, and provided general research support.

Clerical Assistant in Office of University Librarian and Administration. Provided support to staff in purchasing, donor recognition and fundraising events, payroll and tax processing. Coordinated applications for biannual library hiring. Processed confidential staff records.
