Director Safety Operation - Holland America & Seabourn @ Holland America Line

About

WHAT I DO: For nearly 20 years, I have directed global safety operations, multimillion-dollar capital projects, compliance, and crisis management efforts, with the most recent being an unprecedented response to COVID-19 in one of the most diverse and demanding commercial transportation sectors: the cruise industry. WHY IT MATTERS: What sets this industry apart is the logistical, legislative, regulatory, and environmental challenges that cross language, cultural, and functional boundaries in the workforce and our customer base. Success demands technical precision, a profound ability to negotiate and communicate with diplomacy, and a genuine desire to interact with people at every level and make them shine. HOW I GOT HERE: I began my career as a master mariner, driving and preparing chemical tanker vessels for inspection by global oil producers. Transitioning to travel aboard passenger ships was thrilling but by no means a pleasure cruise. I attribute my success in capital project management, team building, and advocating for improved work culture to my ground-up progression. WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT: I’m a multilingual and flexible leader of cross-functional teams. My job has allowed me to travel the world, so my interpersonal skills are truly global. I approach even the direst crisis with optimism and inclusivity. I have said that my smile is my business card, but it’s more than that. I’m called upon by peers and direct reports for guidance on project management and negotiation and am relied upon to communicate “up” to senior leadership in ways that are heard, understood, and acted upon. MY DIRECTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Operations & Logistics ► Risk Mitigation ► Global Crisis Response ► International Regulatory Compliance ► Cross-Functional Teams ► Change Management ► Capital Projects ► Safety Culture ► Quality Assurance ► Audits ► Continuous Process Improvement ► Collaboration & Integration

With responsibility for supporting operations of 40+ cruise ships across four Holland America brands—which range in capacity from 400 to 2,000 crew and 650 to 5,000 guests—I make sure all vessels’ navigational readiness, safety, and operations comply with international, country-level, and local regulations for maritime operation and environmental protection. A key initiative was our unprecedented response during the earliest stages of COVID-19, through which I collaboratively negotiated with global and national authorities to repatriate 100,000+ guests and crew and secure safe movement and harbor of vessels reduced monthly operating for optimal efficiency without impairing compliance and readiness.

Following three major, successive incidents—including the capsize of the Costa Concordia in Italy—I collaborated in a massive effort to standardize health, environmental, safety, and security protocols, procedures, and systems for every ship in Carnival’s eight-brand, 102-vessel fleet. We collected and assessed hundreds of individual operating procedures to identify best practices for the new protocols. These and other new systems enabled us to increase data collection for improved safety across the fleet.
