Elizabeth Otto is Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art, specializing in 20th-century art, architecture, design, the history of photography, and gender and sexuality studies, with a particular specialization in the Bauhaus, arguably the most influential art school of the 20th century. The author or editor of ten books, her work has been supported by numerous fellowships, including a Guggenheim, a Dedalus, and a Getty Scholar Award; she has also received fellowships from the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Experienced leader in higher education as the current Director and former Executive Director of UB's Humanities Institute from 2013-19.

Elizabeth Otto is a historian of the art and media cultures of modern Europe. She has published widely on issues of art, media, and gender in late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century art and popular culture. She is the author of Haunted Bauhaus: Occult Spirituality, Gender Fluidity, Queer Identities, and Radical Politics (MIT Press, 2019), Bauhaus Women: A Global Perspective (with Patrick Rössler, Bloomsbury/Knesebeck, 2019), and Tempo, Tempo! The Bauhaus Photomontages of Marianne Brandt (Bauhaus-Archiv/Jovis, 2001), and the co-editor of five additional books. As the Executive Director of the Humanities Institute at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) from 2013-19, she co-founded the Buffalo Humanities Festival.
