Elaine P.
Probate Associate Attorney @ Cortes Law Firm
About
A Toastmasters speech at work while still with Cartus, re-ignited Elaine's desire to realize her childhood ambition as an attorney... ... This speech made Elaine rethink what she wanted to do in her life. The main reason why Elaine wants to be an attorney is to help many others who are financially challenged like her family but yet cannot find useful legal advice when the need arises. Elaine is always passionate about criminal law, immigration law, banking law, business law, and corporate law, which she is looking forward to practicing soon too. In Singapore, Elaine had previously helped her dad resolve his lawsuit when a lady he had a car accident with, sued him wrongfully for damages up to SGD9000 or legal charges would be brought upon her dad. It was a non-injury car accident and the lady was at fault. Still, the case blew out of proportion understandably due to her dad's ignorance and limited capability in reading English letters. This was a full year’s period of struggle and anguish with multiple visits to the law firm and the courthouse. Thankfully, Elaine received a little hint from the plaintiff's attorney (their opponent), and together with the knowledge Elaine gained during the subprime financial crisis in her banking days, she managed to fight through and win the case successfully without hiring any attorney. The plaintiff's attorney inspired Elaine that she could be like her too and that she does have the basic qualities to be an attorney as well. Elaine is articulate and has strong people skills, and she is always here to help people achieve their goals in life, regardless of the industry that she steps into. Elaine strongly believes in equality; and everyone, regardless of race, gender, social status, or sexual inclination, must be given the golden opportunity to remain innocent until proven guilty with due process in place. Elaine is an enthusiast who never fails to push through difficult times, and always emerges triumphant in whatever she sets her mind to. Elaine's career history is the perfect scorecard of her achievements thus far, and she continued to challenge herself daily in Law School. Elaine has since graduated from Law School in Spring 2024, and is looking forward to taking on new challenges in her legal career. "In law, it is good policy to never plead what you need not, lest you oblige yourself to prove what you can not." ~ Abraham Lincoln Veritas numquam perit.
