Working in Asset Management and Neighbourhood Services within SBC on a 50/50 split.

This position requires me to head a team of employees at the Tweeddale Area Office for the Transport & Environmental Standards Network Management section of the Scottish Borders Council. The job involves: The Management of the Tweeddale Road Department Area Office The Management of the substantial Tweeddale Area budget or any budget acquired by the Tweeddale Area Office throughout the year. The production of Condition Survey reports, Area Committee Reports, Financial Reports etc using Microsoft Word/Excel. General Management of the Area Office and the Staff therewith. Dealing with any correspondence with regards to the Area Office. Deciding priority schemes and the allocation of funds to each scheme Representing the Area Office at a variety of meetings – A.N.O meetings, A.N.O/D.L.O Meeting, Area Committee Meetings, and Community Council Meetings etc. Liaison with Councillors, Council Officials, Members of the Public and Council Contractors Continually measuring the performance of the Tweeddale Area Office Ensuring the Health and Safety of any works carried out by contractors working on schemes issued by the Tweeddale Office.

This position required me to work as part of a team of employees at the Peebles Area Office, for the Transport & Environmental Standards Network Management section of the Scottish Borders Council. The job involved: The design and scheme management of various projects including drainage schemes, surfacing schemes, footpath works and wall repair. Carrying out condition surveys on roads, walls and drainage systems. Preparing small Health and Safety Plans for various schemes. Preparing Tender Documents for Schemes being put out to external Contractors. Compiling lists of priority schemes. Applying for Official Road Closures via the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Dealing with Roads Authority duties through the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984. Liaising with Members of the Public regarding Council Services.

The bulk of my role involved the production of AutoCAD drawings and various drafting works, the production of RC and Steel drawings and some 3D modeling works. Whilst working at RMJM Scotland Ltd. I attended Napier University on a day release basis and gained an HNC in Civil Engineering. During my time with the company I worked on various projects such as The Scottish Offices at Victoria Quay in Edinburgh and the Inverness Airport renovations. I left the company to return to full time Education.

Merchison. Edinburgh P/T BSc student 3 years I studied my BSc. in Civil Engineering at Napier University on a day release basis whilst working for Scottish Borders Council. The initiative was funded by both Scottish Borders Council and myself and will hopefully pave the way for Technicians to obtain their BSc. Degrees in the future. Oct. 1997 to Jun. 1999 Herriot-Watt University. Merchison. Edinburgh F/T BEng student 2 years I started the BEng. Civil Engineering Degree Course at Herriot-Watt University on a full time basis. Due to financial difficulties, I decided to take a Gap Year during which I started working for Scottish Borders Council as the Area Technician for Tweeddale.
