Edzo Wisman
Managing & Founding Partner @ Desmos
About
I am the Managing and Founding Partner of Desmos, a boutique investment banking firm advising across borders, sectors, and capital structures. We perform best when complexity is high—at the intersection of capital, strategy, and policy. Over the past 25 years, I have advised on M&A, restructurings, capital formation, and strategic alternatives, often in challenging environments and emerging markets. I have worked across cycles and continents—where finance, governance, and transformation meet. I have also worked from the trenches of Zimbabwean restructuring to the boardrooms of multinational strategy. Importantly, I have sat at the founder’s side of the table: Raising capital under pressure, navigating hard trade-offs, and leading teams through turning points. In all of this, my focus has been consistent: unlocking capital, navigating challenging situations, and aligning stakeholders for long-term value. Desmos is the culmination of that arc. Our way of working—clear-eyed, aligned, and execution-driven—reflects not just my own experience, but the combined judgment of every Desmos partner. We built Desmos to bring a different perspective to investment banking—one grounded in clarity, judgment, and long-term alignment.

Led Haygain through a multi-year growth journey, transforming it from a niche UK operation into a globally recognised equestrian brand. Haygain operated in a hybrid category at the intersection of veterinary health, sporting goods, and equine performance—commercially promising but hard to fund. Despite this, we raised significant capital from leading investors, expanded from a single product into a broader portfolio, completed a US acquisition, and transitioned from distributor-led sales to D2C platforms. Haygain became official supplier to the US, UK and German national equestrian teams—a unique position in the industry. We were adopted by Olympic riders, veterinary hospitals, and everyday horse owners alike, building a premium brand in 30+ countries. A major growth round backed by a leading family office and valuing the company at a significant step-up (based on a clear path to recurring, high margin revenues) was in final stages, but collapsed unexpectedly when the investor could not complete. This setback proved fatal: Haygain had structural limitations, including margin constraints and an overconcentrated product portfolio—particularly in regionally split categories, with each of North America and Europe dominated by one product each. These challenges were compounded as we had just come out of COVID-era and post Brexit supply chain disruptions, while easy growth capital had ended. Haygain entered administration in 2024. It was a difficult chapter, but not without pride. The experience sharpened my understanding of capital formation, unit economics, team leadership, and strategic prioritisation. More importantly, it gave me a perspective few advisors have: I’ve sat at the founder’s side of the table—raising capital under pressure, leading teams through setbacks, and confronting hard trade-offs with limited runway. I’ve seen what it means to build something real and to carry the weight when things go wrong. That experience informs how we work at Desmos.

Non Executive Director | Consilium Corporate Recovery Funds
Miami/Fort Lauderdale Area
Appointed Non Executive Director of two investment funds of leading emerging markets investment firm Consilium Investment Management LLC (Consilium Corporate Recovery Master Fund, Ltd. and Consilium Corporate Recovery Fund, Ltd.)

Chief Executive Officer
London, United Kingdom | Harare, Zimbabwe
Led the turnaround of Cambria Africa plc, an AIM-listed Sub-Saharan investment holding company with operations in Zimbabwe, streamlining a legacy portfolio and repositioning consolidated businesses as potential regional champions. Stepped in as CEO at a moment of Zimbabwean optimism. After a decade of hyperinflation real GDP growth grew to 20%. By 2016 this stalled to 0% as political instability, institutional weakness, limited access to capital resurfaced. Restructured a dozen underperforming businesses, consolidating them into four scalable operations (one ZSE listed) with regional growth potential. Cut losses at portfolio level from $18 million to near break-even amid steadily weakening macro conditions. Oversaw M&A, closures, and debt and equity financings in highly challenging environments. Limited international investor appetite for 'Zimbabwe risk' led to persistent undercapitalization. Engaged Renaissance Capital and Imara to explore a ZSE listing, using local optimism to unlock local capital. Jointly concluded that it was an unsuitable solution at that time. Worked closely with portfolio company CEOs, investors, lenders, auditors, and regulators, often under political pressure. Initially Harare based, close to portfolio companies, then led regional expansion (Zambia, Malawi, other SADC countries) from London. Handled governance and IR for a London-listed company with deep exposure to frontier markets. Personally led contested exit of Cambria’s largest shareholder, navigating financial and legal disputes. Chair and I jointly resigned when the board’s ability to guide the company was no longer possible. We left behind a leaner, more focused group re-positioned for regional growth. This was a defining chapter. It was intense, demanding, and politically volatile—but also rewarding. It sharpened my instincts in governance, capital structure, and stakeholder alignment in the toughest of markets, and laid important groundwork for the creation of Desmos.

Senior Advisor
London, United Kingdom
Appointed to one of the Global Leadership Foundation’s Africa Committees—confidential advisory groups led by former heads of state and senior diplomats offering counsel to national governments across the continent. Worked on a country-focused initiative alongside a small core team that included Nobel Laureate and former President F.W. de Klerk, Baroness Lynda Chalker, former Botswana President Sir Ketumile Masire, and Sir John Shepherd. Committees typically operated in-country over several days at a time, engaging directly with heads of state and senior officials in private, closed-door settings. The team advised national leadership on attracting responsible FDI, pursuing governance and institutional reform, and navigating political transition. While the government ultimately resisted meaningful change, the engagement provided direct engagement with political power, state fragility, and the practical limits of external influence.

Member of the Advisory Board
Prisma Business Management Inc.
Toronto, Canada
Appointed to the Advisory Board of a turnaround-focused consulting group during the global financial crisis. Prisma supported North American divisions of European corporates. Many of their clients were under pressure due to collapsing demand, liquidity shortages, or operational misalignment. Provided strategic input on restructuring scenarios, cross-border governance challenges, and recapitalization options. Gained early exposure to operational turnaround dynamics and board-level decision-making in crisis conditions. This role added practical insight into business transformation, complementing my strategic advisory work and deepening my understanding of value preservation during systemic stress.

Managing Director
Toronto, Canada | New York, New York
Founded and led a cross-border corporate finance advisory boutique focused on complex mandates for multinational corporates, private business owners, and financial institutions. The firm advised on M&A, capital raises, debt restructurings, and strategic alternatives—often involving multiple stakeholders and, international dimensions. Built a strong team and established partnerships with leading advisory firms in Europe and Asia-Pacific. The firm operated with global reach and maintained a distinguished advisory board of former CEOs, former European Commissioner and Cabinet Ministers, and leading investment bankers. Over seven years, advised on mandates exceeding $45 billion across sectors, geographies, and transaction types. Many engagements required navigating multi-party dynamics, regulatory sensitivities, or long-cycle capital decisions. SL&C laid the groundwork for Desmos: An evolution of the same vision and the same values, now amplified by deeper experience, a broader team, and a sharper focus on impact.

Committee Member
Ontario Chemistry Value Chain Initiative
Toronto, Canada
(incl. Ontario Chemical Industry Executive Steering Committee) Appointed to the executive steering group behind Ontario’s first government-led initiative to strengthen competitiveness, innovation, and capital formation across the province’s chemical and industrial value chains. Played a central role in shaping long-term sector strategy—supporting an early shift toward biochemistry and green chemistry, well ahead of prevailing industry sentiment. Helped design the initiative’s evergreen investment fund structure, which remains active two decades later and has provided foundational capital to numerous early-stage ventures in the sector. Participated actively in high-level steering discussions, helping shape the strategic agenda alongside policymakers and senior executives from Canada’s largest chemical companies. The experience provided early exposure to long-cycle industrial transformation, strategic capital structuring, and cross-sector collaboration—and directly led to a major strategic alternatives review mandate for Imperial Oil’s chemicals division (the Canadian subsidiary of ExxonMobil) at Stuart Lammert & Co.

Vice President, Investment Banking
Toronto, Canada
Joined one of Canada’s leading independent mid-market investment banks, then known for combining advisory services with principal investment through one of the country’s largest independent mezzanine and senior debt platforms. Initially hired as an Associate and promoted to Vice President within a year. Advised on M&A, divestitures, and capital raises across sectors including food, retail and consumer products, automotive, chemicals, and logistics. Focused particularly on privately held and family-owned businesses, as well as private transactions involving Canadian divisions of larger European corporates—involving cross-border dynamics and competing stakeholder agendas. Led the development of CCFL’s first international partnerships in Europe, initiating the firm’s global reach. Also redesigned the firm’s positioning and credentials materials to support business development both domestically and, specifically, abroad. This role marked my full transition into investment banking and laid the foundation for later cross-border and strategic advisory work.
