Visiting researcher on a study to quantify the effect of measurement and feedback on physical activity behaviour (The FAB Study: Feedback, Awareness and Behaviour in the Fenland Study).

Tutor: Taught seminars for ‘Approaches to Psychology’ (1st year core course), Social Psychology (1st year option), Social Cognition (2nd year core course) and ‘Psychology and Social Issues’ (2nd year option); designed and ran research methods and statistics workshops for ‘Research Methods in Social Psychology’ (2nd year core course); and, co-supervised 3 3rd year undergraduate psychology research project students.

* Research Psychologist: * Responsibilities include: * · Conducting systematic reviews to gather the evidence base for interventions in terms of psychological theories and models, target behaviours, determinants of behaviour, behaviour change techniques, setting and target group. * · Involvement in qualitative research among potential target groups to assess feasibility of interventions and acceptability among the target group. * · Consultation with relevant experts, e.g., scientists, health care providers, and patient groups. * · Development of web-based behaviour change programmes. * · Development of protocols for the delivery of face-to-face and telephone interventions. * · Development of training sessions for intervention providers, and provision of ongoing supervision. * · Development of psychological measures to assess the efficacy/effectiveness of interventions. * · Development of printed educational materials.

Research fellow on a project entitled “Concordance, Adherence, Compliance in Medicine Taking: A Scoping Exercise”. My responsibilities included: the preparation of a systematic review of interventions to promote adherence to prescriptions; preparing reports for user group representatives, a panel of experts, and the funding body; and, consulting with user group representatives and an expert panel from a range of disciplines. Additionally, I was the sole Research and Development Support Unit research fellow for Brighton and Hove University Hospitals. This role involved the provision of statistical and methodological consultancy and training for local NHS secondary care staff working in various disciplines. The level of research project support ranged from undertaking power calculations for LREC applications or guidance on how to enter data in SPSS, to generating hypotheses, undertaking data analysis, and writing-up abstracts.

* Responsibilities include: * Collaborating with clinical colleagues at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and the Yorkshire Quality and Safety Research Programme to develop a national centre for quality and safety research * Preparing grant applications as a principle investigator to develop quality and safety, health behaviour change and/or public health research, in collaboration with BIHR and NHS organisations * Promoting the translation of research knowledge into local and national policy through active partnership with clinical staff * Working with a multidisciplinary group of researchers and clinical staff in the Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and the PCT to implement and evaluate innovative approaches to improving patient safety, health behaviour change and/or public health * Developing opportunities for student learning within an NHS environment (e.g. placements, joint modules etc.)

Lead for the Behaviour Change theme within the Institute of Psychological Sciences http://bit.ly/15D1N1j Generally I'm involved in developing and evaluating interventions that use behaviour change techniques in diet, exercise, medication adherence, tobacco cessation, and patient safety. I'm interested in why people don't do what they say they want to do. As such, my research looks at: what people say they want to do what people do why they do or don't do what they say they want to do interventions to help them do what they say they want to do This is typically in the context of interventions to promote health behaviour change. I employ evidence synthesis techniques and qualitative and quantitative approaches in the development of behaviour change interventions, and test their acceptability, deliverability, and efficacy in feasibility and phase 2 randomised controlled trials. I have an interest employing mHealth apps, mobile sensing, wearables and objective measurement in their evaluation.
