Fourth-Year Business Chinese
Based at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the program includes six weeks of intensive, personalized instruction in Chinese language classes that emphasize the specialized vocabulary, jargon, linguistic styles, and appropriate behaviors used in a professional setting. Private tutorials and daily practice with a language partner chosen from local university students supplement class work. During the final four weeks of the program, I had field placement in the Shanghai office of a national company, which gave me an invaluable opportunity to apply my classroom learning of Chinese in a professional setting. I attended meetings, assisted in projects, translated, researched, and observed how the Chinese do business. Program instructors met weekly with me to answer questions concerning language and linguistics. As final term projects, I wrote an analytical account in Chinese of my experience as an intern and gave an oral presentation in Chinese to instructors and fellow students.
