About
Michael (Born UK, 1956) is an independent professional landscape & coastal archaeologist, with a specialism in delivering Adult Learning modules in archaeology and ancient history. In addition to a long career in British and Greek archaeology, Michael has enjoyed a successful business career in the public, private and commercial business sectors, specialising in marketing, communications and engagement. Michael is a highly experienced marketing and communications professional, with both experience of working both in the UK and on the European mainland, working at a senior level for many years, including over 17 years working in Whitehall where he worked closely with several Secretaries for State and helped launch such initiatives and campaigns as the Enterprise Initiative and the Competitiveness Agenda. He later went on to work on UK Environmental Policy, lobbying for UK industry in Brussels and a table member of the Article 21 negotiating committee that drafted the Packaging & Packaging Waste Directive, assisting in the drafting of the Bill that made this law in the UK. In 1999 he was appointed as the Marketing Manager of the EU Eureka Initiative, working in the Brussels Secretariat. After leaving the Civil Service in 2001, Michael formed his own consultancy business, delivering marketing and communications support to organisations like the NHS, local Authorities and private companies. He later went on to develop business interests in the music and fashion industries. Before moving back into Academia Michael also worked as a freelance journalist, working with the national press and media. Michael has a background in Adult Learning that extends over 40 years. He is a tutor for Northants Adult Learning Services and has been successful in developing a strong customer base for courses in Archaeology and Ancient History within the county of Northamptonshire. Late in 2022, Michael teamed up with fellow Adult Learning tutor, and former University of Leicester student, Joanna O'Neill, to form My Ancient World Learning Ltd, a company specialising the development and global delivery of online and classroom courses, educational workshops and visits, on archaeology and ancient history for Adult Learners who wish to further their interests and learn more about past times. Michael is a Trustee of the Nautical Archaeology Society and Chair of Northamptonshire Archaeological Society.
