Dr Hua Guo

Dr Hua Guo is a mining engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in both mining operations and R&D, including three years with Pasminco’s underground mining operations at Broken Hill, six years with BHP Iron Ore’s surface mining operations in the Pilbara, and 27 years at the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency. At CSIRO, Hua held a number of senior leadership roles and was the Research Director for Sustainable Mining Technologies involving 80+ specialists. He was responsible for strategic planning and delivering R&D in mining geosciences and engineering, production technologies, environmental sustainability, and emissions abatement. Under his leadership, world leading technologies were successfully developed and adopted in Australia and overseas, with substantial benefits delivered. CSIRO is recognised internationally as a leading force in mining technology and innovation. Hua retired from CSIRO in February 2025. Hua is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland, Australia, and a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Internationally he serves on the Global Methane Initiative, the International Organising Committee of the World Mining Congress (WMC), and is Chair for the 26th World Mining Congress in 2023, Brisbane, Australia.
