About

Hello! I’m Dr. Andrew Hetzler, a software engineering manager by day and a cyber-physical security researcher by night.I love building teams and helping them create highly resilient, scalable, performant, and secure software solutions. My favorite thing about being a manager is mentoring my FTEs and consultants. I enjoy teaching others about software engineering principles and design patterns, and how to leverage them to build high-quality software consistently.I also enjoy researching and writing scholarly articles on cyber-physical security, blockchain, and software engineering. My main research interests include highly automated vehicle (HAV) architecture, HAV blockchain architectures and solutions, and HAV compliance and interoperability. I am also interested in medical device security research. I would love to connect with you! Students, I’m also open to serving on your thesis or dissertation committees. Please let me know if I can help you.

I lead two teams for Kroger's Digital Payments domain. If you've shopped online or used Kroger Pay, you've interacted with one or more systems I've designed. My primary responsibilities include designing software systems, requirements elicitation, mentoring teammates, cultivating a positive and inclusive environment, and writing high-quality software. Key Achievements: - Designed and implemented a brand new, highly available, and scalable payment solution. The new payment solution allows Kroger to support additional payment capabilities, decrease PCI scope, and reduce costs. Technologies used are Java, Spring Boot, Cassandra, PCF, and Kubernetes. - Worked with other software engineering leads to create engineering standards in the Digital Payments domain. These standards included software engineering principles and patterns, code quality expectations, code review guidelines, and more. - Led the design and development for Kroger Pay for the payments domain. Kroger Pay allows customers to scan a QR code that contains a payment method from their digital wallet. Technologies used are Kotlin, Spring Boot, and PCF.

My primary responsibilities are: advancing the platform, implementing client-specific functionality to the platform while being mindful (not breaking!) other clients' functionality, maintaining uptime and SLAs for clients that host their websites and email with us, maintaining the SVN repository for the backend code, maintaining the VSS repository for the front end code. Achievements - Designed and built Nox's AWS infrastructure. This included: building out the VPC, securing the VPC and EC2 instances through security groups, configuring load balancers, creating custom services on the EC2 instances (including self-healing services), migrating Nagios monitoring to CloudWatch, creating custom CloudWatch metrics and services to publish said metrics, migrating DNS to Route 53. - Migrated clients and other infrastructure from the Los Angeles colocations to AWS. - Developed a system that automatically generated POs for each vendor. When the warehouse received an item from the PO, the system would search for any orders that needed that item and update the quantity allocated to that item and order. If the order was fulfilled, it would automatically be flagged as "ready to ship". - Solely responsible for both production and staging environments. This includes: physical servers, vSphere environment, AWS EC2/EBS/ELB, NAS storage, Zimbra, Windows and Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Amazon Linux) platforms, Citrix NetScalers, Nagios monitoring system, JBoss. - Configured and deployed AWS Connector in our vSphere environment. This allowed us to easily import or export VMs to and from AWS and vSphere. - Developed scripts to automate IT tasks (log deletion, backups, etc.).
