Technical leadership across a portfolio of products delivering innovation in material properties characterisation (particle size, shape, concentration etc). Responsible for new product development on £150m+ portfolio of scientific instrumentation, budget ~£4m pa. Line management responsibility for R&D team (60+ software developers, hardware engineers, scientists and researchers) across UK and China. Strong proponent for talent development, implementing capability and hiring frameworks. Ensuring project progress using Agile frameworks with KPIs / outcome-based OKRs, and risk management. Project and portfolio financial modelling and scenario analysis. Conducted due diligence on M&A targets. Providing operational support to start-up following strategic venture capital investment. Strategy generation, creating product roadmaps, early careers pipelines, and high performing teams. Reporting to senior leadership through a variety of communication channels as appropriate.

Led the post launch phase of the Zetasizer product launch. Supported pilot production, further software features, drove quality improvements, put KPIs, SPC in place, to meet cross-functionally approved production yield targets. Transitioned product to sustaining dept.

Worked to launch the Zetasizer Ultra and Pro products. Led the development of two novel measurement modes - MADLS and Particle Concentration - to help drive sales by positioning the Zetasizer in emerging markets, e.g. biotherapeutics. Developed a focus on high performance algorithm design, system debugging, robust operation, product delivery to market and people management.

Led the technical development of a prototype for protein structure determination using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, combined with dynamic light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy. Worked with a team to overhaul an automated plate sampler product by improving the optical robustness, rigidity of the 3-axis stepper motor stage, and wash and drain fluidics - improving manufacturing yield and installation success.

Ethene gas detection via difference frequency generation of mid-IR radiation using two commercial available NIR diode laser sources

Engineered two novel greenhouse gas sensing instruments, from conception, through component selection, sourcing, assembly, developing control and signal processing software, testing, data collection and analysis.
