Doris Segura

Temporary Foreign Worker Advisor @ Government of Alberta

About

I am a seasoned Labour Relations professional with a strong foundation in the government administration sector and over 15 years of extensive experience as an Employment Standards Officer. Since November 2022, I have taken on the role of Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Advisor at the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office (TFWAO), further enriching my understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable workers in Alberta. Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a proven ability to navigate the complexities of Labour Legislation, interpreting and applying employment laws and workplace policies to ensure compliance, fairness, and equity in the workplace. My core competencies span a wide range of Labour Relations functions, including Investigations, Negotiations, Conflict Resolution, Enforcement, and Coaching. A key focus of my current role involves supporting Temporary Foreign Workers through personalized, empathetic, and practical guidance. I proactively inform foreign workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities, ensuring they are empowered with the knowledge to navigate the employment landscape confidently. In cases of alleged mistreatment, including potential elements of human trafficking, I make referrals to appropriate authorities, contributing to the safeguarding of vulnerable individuals. My work is grounded in collaboration across all levels of government, as well as with non-governmental and community-based organizations, to promote safe, respectful, and informed workplaces. I also take pride in delivering tailored outreach presentations to foreign workers, international students with work authorization, employers, and other stakeholders, helping them understand their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. In summary, my multifaceted experience, coupled with a dedication to empowerment and support, positions me as a dynamic and resourceful professional ready to contribute to the welfare of both employees and employers.
