Dong Shin Park
Scientist @ BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc.
About
With over a decade of extensive research experience in human induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSC), neuroscience, and immunology, I am a dedicated scientist focusing on the intricate interactions between neurons and glial cells in the brain. Currently a postdoctoral associate at MIT, I utilize human iPSCs and mouse models to investigate Alzheimer's disease and Down Syndrome. Previously, I conducted research as a PhD student and postdoctoral fellow at A*STAR in Singapore, studying the role of microglia in embryonic brains through in vitro brain organoids generated from human iPSCs. My track record includes numerous publications, patent, and awards, underscoring my scientific prowess and innovation. A collaborative and supportive team member, I thrive on working with diverse colleagues, mentors, and partners. My overarching aim is to advance knowledge and enhance human health outcomes through impactful research contributions.

Experience

Postdoctoral Associate
United States
- Led a project team investigating sensory stimulation effects on both adult and embryonic brain of Down syndrome mouse model (Ts65Dn). - Developed a human iPSC-derived 3D in vitro brain model to study Alzheimer’s disease pathologies associated with the APOE4 genetic risk.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Singapore
-Led a collaborative project to characterize and validate the functions of iPSC-derived microglia in brain organoids. -Collaborated with scientists from another lab to develop a patented protocol for establishing iPSC-derived microglia and brain organoid co-culture systems. -Contributed as a team member to research investigating how the Zika virus affects brain development using microglia-sufficient brain organoids.

Research Assistant
South Korea
-Cloned genes into E.coli to produce target proteins. -Purified proteins via size exclusion and high affinity chromatography. -Utilized Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Cryo-EM for protein structure analysis.

Research Technician
ESR (the Institute of Environmental Science and Research)
New Zealand
-Conducted PCR and qPCR assays to detect pathogenic E.coli (7 STEC) in meat samples, ensuring food safety and quality compliance.
