Photonic S/W development. L0 Control Plane and Liquid Spectrum Liquid Restoration Developing a solution that allows the 6500 L0 Control Plane to program the WaveLogic modems with the optimal line rate/modulation format for the path through the line system. Includes equipping the Blue Planet MCP Provisioning with the ability to tell the NE the optical parameters to program the modem with when the NE Control Plane mesh restores channels after a fault. Layer 0 Control Plane Lead the development of DWDM system control software, both on-NE (RLS and 6500) control plane design and off-box solutions to optimize optical spectrum resource usage and availability. PhotonIc Network Simulator Developing hardware simulation tools to improve code quality, speed development and reduce lab costs: better, faster and cheaper. Working on continuous improvement of the overall speed and reliability of network fault recovery.

Responsible for OME S/W development efficiency through static analysis and code restructuring. Like all successful products, the 6500 underwent growth in ways that stressed software engineers' ability to unit test and integration test their features and regression test past feature, prior to verification. Primed development of a network simulation environment that improved design test capability at reduced costs.

In the late 1990s, Nortel began to evolve its carrier voice platform (the DMS product family) so that customers could run their carrier voice over their data networks. It allowed customers to replace their DMS fabrics with a geographically dispersed packet cloud, placing the gateways ("peripherals") closer to the local exchanges or end users and yet still have them managed from the core. ATM was initially the packet technology chosen and my role was providing ATM expertise to the DMS architecture teams and providing voice and DMS expertise to the ATM switch (MSS 15000 "Passport") design teams. The result was a "five nines" TL-9000 compliant ATM switch that could be configured and engineered handle Mothers' day traffic while being reliable enough for 911 services. Later the solution evolved to support IP networks, using IP routing to provide the necessary fault detection and recovery, and using the voice gateway capabilities of the MG15000. I was responsible for working with customers at a technical level to ensure the platform had the right capabilities at the data path, control and OAM&P layers. I led a team that introduced several novel Ethernet and IP resilience networking capabilities to the MSS15000 platform.

Concorde was Nortel entry into the carrier grade ATM swtich business. It was a 10Gig switch that supported DS3/E3, OC3 and OC12 interfaces, and provided both PVC and SVC services using PNNI networking. Starting as a intermediate S/W designer on the Real Time Controller platform on, my first role was to re-code S/W "written" in ObjectTime as plain C++ while writing a Concorde S/W architecture document. I was given ownership of the RTC platform's S/W architecture and over several releases make large scale changes to the process architecture to improve performance, capacity and resiliency to both S/W and H/W faults. Concorde was the initial ATM switch used in trials of the Succession voice over packet solution. My participation in a "tiger-team" led to the decision to end development on Concorde and focus on the Passport 15000 that would ultimately become the platform of choice for Nortel's future voice over packet (ATM or IP) carrier solutions.

The Ontario Telepresence Project was a governement sponsored project, shared between University of Toronto and Carleton University to provide remote working, teaching, collaboration and awareness technology research to Ontario companies. My role was, as a S/W and systems engineer, was to provide sociologists and psychologists with the systems, prototypes and mockups required to conduct human factors studies on Telepresence techologies. http://www.dgp.toronto.edu/tp/tphp.html

Focus of both B.A.Sc and M.A.Sc theses was on the human factors of digital medical imaging practices: - to what degree can digital X-rays be processed to improve shaprness and contrast without impacting the radiologist's ability to perform a correct diagnosis - using a "user centred design" approach, develop a video workstation for cariologist to review echo-cardiograms and coronary angiogram films in the ICU. https://doi.org/10.1117/12.146993
