Ronald Miller, Jr., Ph.D.
Independent Workforce Development and Writing Consultant @ Self-employed
About
Empowering others to reach their full potential is the guiding motivation of my career journey! My passion for learning—and instilling a love of learning in others—developed from teaching college English classes at 3 institutions of higher learning, coordinating University Human Resources, directing a University Career Development Office, and leading the implementation of a new internship program for The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Teaching, Workforce Development, and administrative-leadership careers interest me, whether in an education setting or the private sector. My teaching commenced while double majoring in English and religion at Presbyterian College. I worked as a Writing Center Tutor in the first two years of the center's operation. While working on my MA and Ph.D in English at The University of South Carolina, I was then both a Writing Center Tutor and a Graduate Teaching Assistant. After graduate school, I accepted a post-doctoral appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor at The University of South Carolina, followed by an appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Presbyterian College. I was then an Assistant Professor at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC and worked in Human Resources, before becoming Director of the University’s Office of Career Development – a position I held for 8 years. As a result of working with college students in academic and student-life settings, I have developed an interest in career planning, a field of study I practice both through one-on-one coaching and workshops. My teaching philosophy is that the aim of education should be to shape intellectual character, a process that depends upon excellence not only in academics, but also in organizational involvement, student life, and the pursuit of knowledge- for knowledge's sake. Socrates taught that "the unexamined life is not worth living." Similarly, my career pursuits are based on this principle: the unlived life is not worth examining. Indeed, I strive to help all whom I serve create lives of authenticity with passionate purposes. "The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both. ” I now welcome new job opportunities!
