About

My colleagues call me “The Answer Man” because when a new development platform needs to be dreamed up and brought to life, I’m the one they call on. For the past 20 years, I’ve worked at Altera (now Intel) as a Senior Engineer & Technical Lead for sophisticated developer tools, systems, and workflows used by global EDA engineers. I enjoy coding into uncharted territory and tend to see relationships between technology components that others overlook. For the first half of my time at Altera, I focused on internal platform-independent software infrastructure, designing layers of abstraction between developers and operating systems. In phase 2, I shifted to large scale software build & development systems using web and cloud technologies. I am extremely detail-oriented, never make the same mistake twice, can code for hours, and enjoy discussing complicated products and ideas with people of all technical ability levels. It has been several times that former colleagues have invited me to join their next adventure. I came into Engineering through an Applied/Engineering Physics degree from Cornell, while working as a programmer for Johns Hopkins University and a world-leading materials-testing solution developer. Following this, I provided coding and release support for a scientific software firm, also doubling as the resident system administrator, which I tend to do wherever I go. Outside of work, I find ways to challenge myself, such as building cabins and tiny houses and renovating our properties. In my downtime, I play fantasy football, and camp out in the woods with friends and family. Architect and primary developer of enterprise build and development infrastructure for Intel FPGA Software (Quartus Prime Design Suite). As part of the Software Production Engineering & Services group, lead migration and integration of existing Altera software development systems and processes into the Intel environment. Successfully re-architected existing infrastructures to seamlessly straddle both environments while maintaining developer productivity levels. Implemented C++ library for Linux cross-distro compatibility, as well as significant LSF vs Netbatch abstraction layer. Example projects: Designed and implemented Powershell-based Windows configuration management system for all department machines. Seamlessly enforced required development & security configurations for both OS and Visual Studio installations. Architect of custom build artifact solution, managing multiple terabytes of new content per day. Provided local-site Netapp replication for load-balancing, plus cross-site replication for global developer support. Technical Lead for Django web applications. Data modeling architect for build and development related web tools. Member of team developing new git-based devops system. Designed interfaces for exchanging data with existing devops infra. Led team of junior developers and operations staff with regular frequent guidance sessions, providing insights into problem areas and direction on both solutions and new projects.

As part of the Software Development Infrastructure Group, directed teams of engineers across US, Canada, and Malaysia to standardize all EDA tools in the FPGA Design Suite to operate under a single development, source control, and release management model. Earned successive promotions due to the following achievements: -> Constructed cross-platform build system core architecture and workflows to collapse 6 disparate flows into a single Python-based platform compatible with LSF compute farm and home-grown monitoring solutions. Innovated single-core ‘build and development’ architecture used to design 32- and 64-bit products on Windows and Linux, and built cross-platform configuration-driven engine. -> Co-created Perl continuous integration system and Python pre-commit build platform on a Django database to expedite the work of 1,000 engineers. Drove integration with Perforce Source Control system and LSF-based compute farm. -> Consolidated 3 source control systems into a single Perforce instance and served as the primary sysadmin for the new system, including offline backups, server monitoring, storage and server forecasting, and upgrades. Wrote scripts to automate transition to Perforce and define fixed consistent flows.

As part of the Framework & Porting Group, built, upgraded, and continually improved internal C++/MFC-based platform-agnostic infrastructure used to create abstraction between developers and operating systems. Leveraged OO DBMS, STL, Tcl, and Flexim technologies. -> Led design elements for Quartus proprietary chip-design software platform doubling as a synthesis tool and place-and-route tool, supporting both 32- and 64-bit systems. Invented communication vehicles to relay messages between processes and queue-based system supporting messaging APIs for both front-end and back-end. Delivered a suite of GUI tools, including MFC-based apps using doc/view architecture and dialog prompts. -> Created compiler and third-party libraries, porting C++ code base from Windows to UNIX. Set up cross-platform library linkage and loading functionality and built GNU makefiles to abstract away platform and compiler differences. Supported Mainwin SDK and innovated a framework for integrating third-party libraries. -> Autonomously rewrote licensing and encryption functionality permitting third-parties to securely sell IP to customers. In gaining notoriety for this, joined IEEE 1735 Committee to establish Verilog open framework defining IP encryption standards industry-wide.
