Vice-Provost (Academic & Global Learning) @ Carleton University

About

I’m the Vice-Provost (Academic & Global Learning) at Carleton University and a Professor in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. My portfolio has expanded beyond earlier roles as Vice-Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) to include institution-wide leadership in academic strategy, curriculum and program development, quality assurance, and global learning. I lead teaching and learning at scale: overseeing student success and experiential learning, curriculum renewal and academic quality assurance, supporting classroom modernization and digital learning, and coordinating university-wide initiatives with Faculties. I oversee Teaching and Learning Services and Academic Programs & Strategic Initiatives, chair the Senate Quality Assurance and Planning Committee, and guide units through program reviews. I also support new programs that respond to emerging needs and embed strong learning outcomes—including intercultural and global competencies. Global learning at Carleton means embedding international and intercultural experiences across our academic mission and ensuring access for all. This includes building inbound/outbound mobility, expanding exchanges and globally focused experiential learning, developing joint/dual degrees and other transnational educational offerings with rigorous quality assurance, cultivating partnerships in priority regions, strengthening inclusive pedagogy, aligning recruitment and enrolment strategies, and representing Carleton in international networks. I founded the Future Learning Lab, underpinned by the Students as Partners, iCureus and FUSION programs, to enable experimentation with course design and emerging technologies, with a strong focus on skills and industry engagement. I’ve co-chaired the University Academic Plan, Digital Strategy, Future of Teaching and Learning Initiative, and Working Group for Student Success. My research spans the political economy of science and risk, middle power theory, Canadian and South African foreign policy, the philosophy of higher education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Previously: Head of STEaPP at UCL and Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning) at Wits. Service includes past Chair of Volunteer Ottawa, adjudicator for the Canada–US Fulbright Commission, editorial boards (Digital Policy Studies, Center for Engaged Learning), and co-editor of Political Pedagogies (Palgrave).
