• Designed crime prediction algorithms with the Chicago Police Department. Developed risk models based on machine learning and social network analysis to estimate the probability that an individual with an extensive criminal record will become involved in a shooting or a homicide in the near future. Project funded by the National Institute of Justice. • In partnership with the Elgin Police Department, devised risk assessment models to identify individuals at high risk of involvement in violence. The model allows the use of individual-based risk models for social-services interventions in small and medium size communities that do not have enough data to develop their own predictive algorithms. Obtained the Illinois Tech’s Nayar Prize II. • Developed machine-learning algorithms with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of Los Angeles to predict heart attacks and cardiac deaths. Designed an easy and efficient system that clinicians can readily interpret with a visual display, contrary to the perception in this area that machine learning provides only “black box” solutions.

Tutored, advised and evaluated students in the areas of statistical pattern recognition, linear systems theory, computer vision and image processing.
