David Chiu

I have served in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for over 20 years and is an Associate Director in the Information Technology Services Office (ITS). ITS is providing central IT services to about 5,000 staff, 30,000 students and more than 300,000 alumni. The professional team in ITS consist of around 200 full-time and project staff supporting hundreds of IT systems and thousands of physical and virtual servers. My team have to manage all the end point devices in campus as well as the multimedia facilities in 200 lecture theatres, classrooms and informal learning spaces such as student computer labs. There are many ICT achievements of PolyU that I had played a key role, such as the establishment of the first Cyber University in Asia, the first institution in Asia to launch a Virtual Reality Campus on Second Life, the first institution in Asia to deploy VDI for every staff and every student for access anytime, anywhere via any device, the only institution in Hong Kong to benchmark the IT services continuously for 15 years against the top universities in the world. During the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong, I had undertaken a million-dollar Quality Education Fund (QEF) project to assist primary and secondary schools to deploy e-Learning so that students may study at home when all classes were suspended. Two ICT competitions for all local secondary schools and one ICT competition for all universities in Greater China region had been organized by me in different periods. Besides the involvement in education sector, I had assisted various government departments to formulate e-Learning strategy and develop online training platforms. By applying my expertise in Virtual Reality, I had brought in disruption in commercial sector and facilitated the Digital Transformation of various listed companies in Hong Kong.
