About

Environmental Policy Advocate \ former City Councilmember Just finished my third term on the Oakland City Council. I'm proud of the reputation I have developed as a hard-working and effective public servant and dedicated community/environmental advocate. Throughout my career, I have worked as a policy director; environmental and public interest reform-minded advocate; and community service leader. In my twelve years on the City Council, I've earned my reputation as a proactive and effective local policymaker with a demonstrated commitment to and leadership on environmental sustainability and climate justice, affordable housing, public safety and police reform, public libraries, and more. I work hard to solve local and state problems with determination and innovation, seek to instill a greater sense of community problem-solving in what comes out of government, listen and pay attention to people's concerns and expertise, and stay true to my strong sense of integrity and public service. Go to www.dankalb.net for additional information. Previously, I was the CA Policy Director for the Union of Concerned Scientists for nine years, and I have extensive experience crafting and passing legislation, and engaging with stakeholders and experts at the state and local levels, as well as engaging in the regulatory process on key environmental/climate and energy matters.

As the Union of Concerned Scientists' (UCS) California Policy Director, Dan Kalb directed the governmental affairs work in California. He worked with state legislators, agency officials, civic, business and labor leaders, and other NGOs to craft and promote strong and effective climate, renewable energy, clean transportation, and air quality policy solutions that decrease our dependence on fossil fuels, help to grow a strong clean technology economy, and reduce emissions of harmful air pollutants and heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Mr. Kalb has been interviewed by dozens of reporters about various local and state environmental/energy issues. Mr. Kalb was frequently interviewed for news radio, and has been quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times and the San Jose Mercury News, among other papers. From 2009-11, he was the lead environmental advocate working on passage of the state's landmark clean energy law that requires all utilities to get no less than one-third of electricity from clean, renewable sources. He also worked on legislation to restrict Coal imports into California, and on legislation to incentivize cleaner cars. He wrote the law requiring that new cars for sale have labels that display the relative levels of smog pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Managed one of the largest Sierra Club (Loma Prieta) chapters in the country. Organized activists and advocated on SF Bay protection, smart growth, open space, transportation, and clean energy issues. I took an active leadership role as part of the coalition to discourage and ultimately stop SFO from expanding their runways out into San Francisco Bay. I worked with allies in the South Bay to increase funding for local mass transit and prevent sprawl development, while supporting smart growth housing in the urban core. Managed two Chapter staff persons and worked with volunteer board members and stakeholders in building coalitions. Met with local, state and federal elected officials on priority issues. Engaged with the media on an on-going basis, including having appeared on PBS's NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.
