Responsibilities: Helped and supported distressed service users and their family and friends via phone and email. Dealt with a variety of individuals who contacted the service, including drug users and offenders. The aim was to support those individuals in distress and empower those who self-harm to improve their quality of life, whilst educating and raising the awareness of self-harm. Used distraction techniques, positive reinforcement and the ability to engage with each individual on a personal level to help those who self-harmed to seek alternatives and assist in their recovery. Successes: This role helped me to understand the importance of remaining calm under pressure and listening empathically and engaging with all individuals, as this helps aid communication and trust between one another. I feel I made a positive contribution to vulnerable individuals and created a secure and productive atmosphere in order to aid their rehabilitation, which on a personal note was very rewarding.
