Alex Lewis and I initiated the Wild Wheelchairs project. We commissioned and funded a University of Southampton team of Masters students to design and build a solar powered off-road handcycle capable of taking two amputees to the top of Ras Dashen, the highest mountain in Ethiopia. In parallel with this we are raising funds to enable a sustainable wheelchair manufacturing facility to be established in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, which will transform the lives of hundreds of people in that region. We also hope that the project will help inspire people in the UK to achieve their goals, irrespective of the obstacles that might be put in front of them.
