Conner James Black, PhD

Associate Director, Autism Center @ Child Mind Institute

About

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Director of the Autism Center at the Child Mind Institute. My expertise lies in the assessment and treatment of autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, and co-occurring mental health concerns across the lifespan. I bring experience across inpatient, outpatient, and early intervention settings, with a strong foundation in interdisciplinary care, systems-level consultation, and evidence-based intervention. Previously, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Center for Autism and the Developing Brain and an APPIC internship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, with a clinical focus on intellectual and developmental disabilities. My research centers on early developmental markers of social anxiety and autism in fragile X syndrome and related neurogenetic conditions. I have co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, served as an ad-hoc reviewer for leading journals, and received national awards for research excellence, including honors from INSAR and the Gatlinburg Conference. In addition to clinical and research work, I’m committed to advancing care through mentorship, training, and program development. I supervise early career clinicians and trainees, lead hospital-wide initiatives to improve care for autistic individuals, and bring a systems-focused, neurodiversity-affirming lens to everything I do.
