I acted as temporary assistant to the Bursary Office, completing a range of administrative tasks. These included processing invoices in FMS, reconciling bank statements and recording fee payments received in SIMS, answering phone calls, and managing enquiries from parents and delivery firms.

In the summer before my final year of study, I spent two weeks in the Human Resources Department of Gloucestershire County Council, gaining knowledge of HR specifically, as well as an understanding of the organisation as a whole. This was my first role in the public sector, which led to my applying to the NGDP. Key tasks included producing a report on the staff discounts website, using data from Google Analytics to quantify the scheme’s usage and value; compiling data for the quarterly Management Information report, selecting figures equivalent to those in previous quarters, and adding a brief commentary; and amending the Council’s policies on Adoption Leave and Whistleblowing. I also wrote a new policy for Reserve Forces employees, using other councils’ and SaBRE’s policies as guidance.

* Work experience in Medical Communications for one week in July 2014, and two further weeks in July 2015. Key tasks included collating delegate feedback from a symposium into Excel and presenting key statistics and quotations in a PowerPoint presentation * writing an abstract of three surveys ahead of an upcoming symposium * constructing a briefing document on lung cancer * and writing a 250-word current news summary for circulation to staff and clients.

My role was in teacher communications and recruitment, collating application forms, selecting participants according to client specifications, and liaising with teachers to organise focus groups, telephone interviews and completion of feedback forms. I was also involved in qualitative data analysis (categorising free text responses from surveys), transcription of focus group recordings, and writing sections of client reports.
