Claire Hartley
Speaker of the Senate @ Iowa State University Student Government
About
I’m motivated by work that blends systems thinking with people‑centered impact. Majoring in Political Science and Spanish, with minors in Sociology and International Studies, has given me a strong foundation in governance, culture, and the social dynamics that shape institutions. I lead with compassion, professionalism, and strong ethical values, and I’m at my best when I’m helping others understand complex structures, feel supported, and contribute meaningfully. In my role as Iowa State Student Government Speaker of the Senate, I focus on representation and advocacy at every level of our legislative process. In this role, I oversee our processes, manage governing documents, and ensure that legislation, committees, and Senate operations run transparently and in line with student needs. I’m able to see the big picture, explain systems clearly, and help others feel supported and included. In every role, I aim to bring thoughtful decision‑making and a steady, values‑driven presence to the teams and communities I serve. I’m especially drawn to work in nonprofit and public service spaces, where mission‑driven leadership and community impact guide the work forward

Speaker of the Senate
Ames, Iowa, United States
As Speaker of the Senate, I serve as the official representative and chief officer of the legislative branch, helping guide agendas, legislation, governing documents, and committee operations. I chair the Rules Committee, act as parliamentarian, manage codification, authorize Senate programs, and support procedural and legal integrity across our work. Beyond the statutory responsibilities, this role is deeply relational. I focus on bringing Senators, committees, and constituency councils together, fostering collaboration, and creating an environment where people feel supported, connected, and able to do their best work.

As an Off‑Campus Senator, I represent students living off campus through advocacy, policy development, and active participation in funding decisions. I attend weekly Senate, constituency, and committee meetings, ensuring that off‑campus perspectives shape legislative discussions and campus initiatives. I stay connected with constituents through outreach and bring feedback into Senate work.

Vice Speaker of the Senate
Iowa State University
As Vice Speaker of a 34‑member Senate, I supported internal operations, upheld legislative rules, and stepped into Speaker duties as needed. In my role as Vice Chair of the Rules Committee, I helped ensure transparent, consistent governance by applying the Bylaws and Constitution and reviewing legislation and nominees for procedural accuracy.

Residence Halls Senator
Iowa State University
As a Residence Halls Senator I attended weekly senate meetings, weekly constituency meetings, and weekly committee meetings. Through senate I voted and debated on legislation that directly affects the student body. In my constituency, the Inter Residence Halls Association I reported senates activity and connected with my constituents. Finally, through rules committee I helped create the baby bylaws and worked on the 2025 bylaw rewrite.
