During my final honours year I carried out a research project: Performance Reporting in UK Charities: Are they successfully disclosing their achievement of aims and objectives? The report discussed the current state of accounting in the charity sector; with an ever growing position in the UK economy, pressure to report effectively has increased. Performance reporting in charities is not adequate but it is imperative for organisations to follow regulations. I looked at the evolution of appropriate legislation and compared current legislation with historical SORP documents; revealing the switch in focus between financial and non-financial reporting. I concentrated on the non-financial reporting, looking at performance reporting. The aim of the study being to analyse the standard of performance reporting within UK charities and to establish whether they were fulfilling SORP’s regulation: to explain charitable activities in terms of performance achieved against objectives set.
