Cassie Sorrells, OTD, OTR/L, CSRS
Occupational Therapist @ Harborview Medical Center
About
I received my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in 2019. Through my time at WashU, I explored interests in both hand therapy and in-patient rehab with a focus on neuro rehab. I completed research in a neuro-rehabilitative laboratory with a focus on peripheral nerve injury and hand usage. For my doctoral component, I assisted in teaching a neuroscience course and conducted research on students’ perspectives in a trauma informed care parenting course.

Fieldwork IIB Student
Milliken Hand Rehabilitation Clinic (Washington University in St. Louis - Occupational Therapy)
St. Louis, MO
I completed my final Fieldwork placement in a hand therapy focused setting. This clinic works in tandem with plastic surgery and orthopedic physicians. While at this location, I saw common hand diagnoses, as well as more obscure and complex diagnoses, such as brachial plexus injuries and nerve transfers. I had ample opportunities to treat a variety of patients and perfect orthosis fabrication. By the end of my placement, I was managing the appropriate caseload for a student and displayed upper level knowledge of hand therapy practice.

Fieldwork IIA Student
Dallas/Fort Worth Area
I completed my first Level II Fieldwork at Encompass Health In-Patient Rehabilitation Hospital. At this facility, I managed a full patient load by the sixth week and led group therapy. I treated older adults with a variety of diagnoses and co-morbidities, assisting them with their ADL's and increasing their independence through adaptive equipment. I also had opportunity to determine patient care after discharge and assess needs at home.

Behavior Therapist
Evansville, Indiana Area
I worked as a behavior therapist with children with autism and intellectual disabilities. I received thorough training in applied behavior analysis and social skills groups. My reason for leaving was to pursue my doctorate in occupational therapy.
