𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱? Let me tell you my story: I'm Carmen, from Ceuta, a small city in North Africa. My curiosity has always driven me, so it was only natural that I pursued a career in science. After nearly seven years working in clinical diagnostic labs in England, the pandemic made me realize something we already suspected: the disconnect between industry, research, and the hospital was real. Healthcare professionals were drowning in work and missing the bigger picture, as science and technology raced ahead. And there I was, asking myself: 𝗗𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀? After countless hours in the lab, Rebeca and I realized we shared the same frustration: scientific information was often difficult for healthcare professionals and the general public to grasp. Motivated by this challenge and a desire to make a difference, we decided to take action. That's how we founded 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 🧡—to help health and pharma companies communicate their advancements in a clear and accessible way. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗸𝗶𝗱, 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹. When I sold decorated shells on the beach, I was already an entrepreneur, even if I didn’t know it yet. Yes, I know, it’s the typical entrepreneur story, but that’s where I learned the importance of taking initiative and being creative. That same energy and drive still fuel me today. As an entrepreneur and healthcare professional, I’ve learned to trust what I can contribute. Specialist Biomedical Scientist
Gibraltar, Gibraltar
I work as a multidisciplinary scientist across several sections of the pathology department, such as haematology, coagulation, transfusion, clinical chemistry, and molecular biology. My duties in blood sciences include interpreting results correlating with the patient history and identifying cell morphology and parasites in blood films. In addition, I perform capillary electrophoresis and interpret graphs to determine abnormal haemoglobins. Also, I can operate highly complex automated systems in blood sciences, loading samples, performing maintenance, running quality controls and calibrations, and troubleshooting accordingly. I work with equipment belonging to Beckman Coulter, Grifols, and Werfen. During the pandemic of COVID-19, I participate as a lead scientist in processing a high throughput of specimens by RT-qPCR. I operate with Biomolecular Systems and Promega equipment. In addition, I perform a wide range of rapid PCR tests using the GeneXpert Instrument System (Cepheid) and PCR panels in the Biofire Filmarray System (Biomerieux). As a result, I can interpret the results and graphics of RT-qPCR and be able to address errors and inadequacies immediately, and initiate corrective actions. Furthermore, as a lead BMS, I train and supervise different team members, help set up new PCR assays, and write working instructions. I participate in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) with Oxford Nanopore Technology. I use NEXTCLADE and PANGOLIN as bioinformatic software to read and upload genomic sequencing results to the worldwide database of SARS-CoV-2. I have a good understanding of health and safety, quality and sterilisation conditions in the laboratory. Being a multidisciplinary scientist has given me a broader vision of clinical diagnosis.

My role in hematology and coagulation involves interpreting results that correlates with the patient history and identifying cell morphology in blood films and other biological fluids like CSF. In addition, as part of the antenatal screening program, I perform high-liquid performance chromatography (HPLC) and interpret graphs to determine abnormal haemoglobins. I also detect malaria parasites in blood films, and with the help of illumigene. In transfusion, I perform automated and manual blood serology tests. I can internet anomalies in the blood groups and antibody screening and detect irregular antibodies. Also, I do stock checks and issue a wide range of blood products that need great attention to detail. The laboratory is accreditated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) During my role, I operate with highly complex automated analyzers, i.e., loading samples, performing maintenance, running quality controls, checking Levey Jennings graphs, and troubleshooting to assure accuracy when reporting patient results. To comply with ISO15189 & UKAS, I analyse data trends, perform external quality controls, carry out horizontal audits of samples, raise non-conformities through the Trust Risk Management System on Q-Pulse, and suggest preventative actions. I provide support and advice to service users and give verbal reports on the telephone. As a specialist scientist, I have to activate contingency plans and make decisions in problematic situations that impact the scope of practice. This role requires excellent communication and organizational skills.
