Director of IC Design
Sunnyvale, California; Austin, Texas
Integrated circuit research and development for the System and Power Management Business Unit. Expertise in high-voltage analog integrated circuit design, utilizing CMOS, DMOS, JFET, and BJT devices. Knowledgeable in the areas of process technology, device modeling and characterization, mask design and verification, and process/product reliability. Recruited and built a design team in Austin; recruited key staff to other departments in Maxim, including Business Management, Applications Engineering, and Technology Research and Development. Coordinated Maxim’s first high-voltage Bipolar/CMOS/DMOS process development and qualification for telecommunications, ultrasound, and automotive applications. Coordinated efforts of organizations including technology research and development, modeling and characterization, CAD, and quality assurance, in order to bring the process to the design community and production. Designed new devices and helped to test, model, and qualify them. Designed Maxim's first high voltage hot-swap products. Worked with customers and applications engineers to define these products and their successors. Pioneered high voltage design techniques and circuits used throughout the company. Key contributor to the definition and design of Maxim's first Power-Over-Ethernet product. Designed power-supply controllers and supervisors for telecommunications and computer equipment. Experience includes design of voltage references, linear and switching regulators, current-sense amplifiers, electronic circuit breakers, charge pumps, oscillators, comparators, and operational amplifiers. Supervised IC mask design, test program development, design characterization, and data sheet preparation. Assisted with product qualification.
Education

Electrical Engineering and Neural Prosthetics
Thesis: “An Optical Telemetry System for Wireless Transmission of Biomedical Signals Across the Skin.” Designed ultra-low-power integrated circuits for the amplification, encoding, and optical transmission of single and multiple channels of biomedical signals including EEG, EMG, and neural waveforms. Designed and assembled optical signal receivers with decoding and demultiplexing circuitry for these systems. Wrote signal processing software. Collaborated on design and assembly of prototype optically-coupled neural waveform telemeter using commercially available components. Prepared grant applications and progress reports for government and private sector funding.

Electrical Engineering
Thesis: “Design Considerations for Minimizing Noise in Micropower CMOS Integrated Circuits.” Studied theoretical models of noise in BJT, JFET, and MOSFET transistors and other circuit elements. Designed and built computer-interfaced noise measurement system for quantifying noise of CMOS transistors in both strong and weak inversion (subthreshold) operation. Formulated design strategy for optimizing the trade-off between power consumption and noise in CMOS analog circuits. • National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Honorable Mention, 1993-1994 • Raytheon Fellow in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics, 1992-1993
