The project I spent FY20 on - Touchless Elevators (as Technical Lead, working 95% at home) has WON A CES AWARD !! Wheee!! This was a project that went from concept meeting to FCC Approved and first paying customer install in 51 weeks.if you've ever had a car recalled for a safety defect, flown on an aircraft with GE engines, or been the recipient of a phresis blood fraction donation, you've been on the positive end of something I did. I am one of those weird people who "play in the cracks of technology"; I often cross over between hardware, software, and down-on-the-metal firmware, or between fields of specialty. I have literally built a fuel cell, designed a water-pollution sensor, coded up a machine-learning spam filter, and consulted on a network security problem all in the same day. It was a long day, I admit, but I made it home before midnight. So far, I've gotten over 60 patents, a similar number of refereed papers, and eight projects that made it all the way to "paying product".I'm an open-source fiend. I much prefer to run software that I can verify line by line, should I ever desire to in order to chase a bug or find a vulnerability - or learn a new trick. Another gain is that even if *I* don't do that line-by-line audit, there's a very high probability that *someone* has. Having released open-source code, I was amazed at how many people have nothing better to do than walk through my code, and the knowledge that someone will do that has definitely affected my coding style in a positive way.Let's not forget those "necessary ancillaries" of research - writing papers, publishing papers, doing presentations, and filing patents. It does no good to come up with something really cool if nobody ever uses it to good effect.Note: in the portrait- that's a whiteboard marker, not a cigarette. I don't smoke.Specialties: Software. Hardware (and not just computer hardware, either. Physical doodads, experimental setups, and demonstration / test systems count). Machine learning, statistical categorization, sequence analysis, tactile interfaces, chemical sensors, physical sensors, fuel cells, optical design, network security, materials science, multiphysics engineering design, high-strength additive manufacturing.And- it turns out I have an EBS (Erdos/Bacon/Black Sabbath) number of 9 (3+3+3).
