Bernardo is a Senior Compliance Counsel at IDB Invest - the private-sector arm of the IDB Group. His work includes advising the organization on integrity and reputational risk issues, conflicts of interest, directorship nominations, regulatory and other matters. Bernardo is a lawyer with 15+ years of experience, admitted to practice in both New York and Brazil. Prior to joining IDB Invest, he was a staff member of the World Bank Group's Integrity Vice Presidency, where he investigated and pursued sanctions in cases of corruption, fraud and collusion as part of the World Bank's sanctions system. From 2013 until early 2018, he was an associate in the New York office of Debevoise & Plimpton, with experience in international dispute resolution, compliance and investigations, and antitrust law. Bernardo's practice included advising clients in investigations relating to anti-corruption, money laundering and antitrust issues, conducting anti-corruption and trade compliance due diligence relating to potential transactions, and representing clients in ICSID and ICC arbitrations, and in complex U.S. commercial litigation cases in federal court. From 2010 to 2012, he was an official with the Brazilian Antitrust Authority, having acted as Deputy Head of one of its investigation and merger review units, where he handled various cartel, abuse of dominance, and merger cases. From 2009 to 2010, he was an associate at a real estate law boutique in Brazil. Prior to that, he pursued internships including at the Brazilian High Court of Justice (STJ) and Brazil’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office. Bernardo received an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, where he was an online editor of the Harvard Business Law Review. He earned his LL.B. with highest honors from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, having completed part of his law studies at the University of Giessen, Germany. Bernardo is a native Portuguese speaker, is fluent in English, Spanish and German, is competent in Italian, and has knowledge of French.
