Elucidated novel mechanisms of breast cancer metastasis, mediated by interactions with the tumor microenvironment in the lab of Dr. Antoine Karnoub. As an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow, identified a pro-metastatic network of microRNAs induced in human breast cancer cells following interactions with tumor-associated mesenchymal stem cells. The network converged upon the transcription factor FOXP2. Repression of FOXP2 and/or expression of the miRNAs induced stem-like genes and phenotypes and enhanced breast cancer metastasis in preclinical models.

Identified molecular processes essential for the genesis and maintenance of leukemia in the lab of Ruibao Ren. N-RAS is an oncogene frequently found mutated in certain leukemias. Our work demonstrated that post-translational palmitoylation of nascent N-RAS proteins is essential for leukemogenesis. This suggests that the RAS palmitoylation machinery may hold promise as a therapeutic target in cancers driven by palmitoylated RAS isoforms.
