Subrata Batabyal, PhD
Director, Nonclinical Development @ Nanoscope Therapeutics Inc.
About
As Director of Non-clinical Development at Nanoscope, I lead pre-clinical research and assay development for gene therapies for neurological disorders. Recently recognized with the 2025 Carl Camras Translational Research Award from the ARVO Foundation for pioneering work in optogenetic vision restoration, specifically for translating multi-characteristic opsin (MCO-010) technology from laboratory to clinical trials. My expertise spans optogenetics, electrophysiology, biomedical instrumentation, and analytical assay development, with extensive experience leading non-clinical development programs for gene therapies targeting neurological disorders. I specialize in analytical assay development including potency assays. My innovations include development of fast-response optogenetic technology, pioneering infrared laser-based non-viral gene delivery systems, and development of label-free optical techniques for detecting neuronal activity. I earned my PhD in Chemistry in 2014, specializing in ultrafast laser spectroscopy for biomolecular interactions, followed by postdoctoral research in BioPhotonics at the University of Texas at Arlington. I am passionate about translating applied biomedical research into real-world clinical solutions, leveraging strong scientific, technical, and interpersonal skills to accelerate breakthrough therapies from bench to bedside for patients with debilitating visual disorders.

Experience

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Texas
1. Optogenetics: Engineered Broadband opsin for optogentics treatment of visual disorders (Dry AMD and RP) 2.Optical Gene Delivery Platform: Developed and integrated ultra-fast near infrared laser based non-contact, non-invasive, targeted gene delivery. 3. Label-free optical detection of neuronal activity: Developed interferometry based optical detection method with picometer resolution to reliably detect single shot optical spikes from functional mammalian neuron.
