Bashir Bakhshideh Zad is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Power Engineering Unit (EPEU) of the UMONS (University of Mons), Belgium, where he holds the Chair in Energy Electronics, supported by Alstom in the context of 'Contribute for Wallonia' innovation platform. He completed his PhD in 2018 at the same university, where he subsequently held a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at its Power Systems and Markets Research (PSMR) group. Over the past 14 years, he has been working on various Research & Innovation projects relating to:- Power system modeling, control, operation, and planning;- Power electronics for energy transition and electrification;- Machine learning and data science in smart power grids and power electronics.His current research focuses on artificial intelligence and digital twin in Power Electronic Systems, also on smart electric railway grids as well as power electronics-dominated electric power grids. He teaches Power Electronics course at Charleroi campus (BSc level), and contributes to a few courses in Smart Grid program (MSc level) at (U)Mons Campus. He also delivers lectures in the frame of the Postgraduate Certificate in Energy Electronics, organized annually by UMONS in Charleroi, Belgium in a partnership between four french-speaking universities in Belgium, Thales Alenia Space, and Alstom. The Chair in Energy Electronics at the University of Mons (UMONS) fosters research, innovation, and education in power electronics with the objective of supporting the energy transition and decarbonization across various sectors such as power grids, mobility, transport, and industry. The Chair is hosted by the Electrical Power Engineering Unit (EPEU) of UMONS, which consists of a team of 4 academics and over 20 (PhD and Postdoctoral) researchers. The Chair is supported by ALSTOM Belgium within the framework of the 'Contribute for Wallonia' innovation platform. Alstom Belgium hosts two centers of excellence, including the Charleroi site, which is dedicated to electrical power conversion, energy storage, and energy efficiency. The Contribute for Wallonia innovation platform unites major industrial stakeholders, both large enterprises and SMEs, with academic and research institutions in Wallonia to collectively drive the development of a sustainable and inclusive future economy. This innovation platform is part of a larger European initiative aimed at defining Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) for Wallonia. The research areas covered by the Chair include (non-exhaustive list): - Control and stability of power electronics-dominated power grids; - Next-generation power electronic converters with high energy efficiency, power density, and reliability for mobility and transportation applications; - Smart electric railway grids integrating EV charging stations, energy storage systems, and renewable generation units; - Artificial intelligence and digital twin techniques for enhanced operation, monitoring, and management of power electronic systems (e.g., battery state-of-charge and state-of-health estimation, condition monitoring of power converters, etc.); - Multilevel and modular multilevel converters for medium- to high-voltage applications.

Contributing to the research projects in the field of the Electric Power Systems regarding: - Power system operation and control; - Power system simulation and optimization; - Voltage regulation and congestion management; - Optimal sizing and placement of distributed generation units; - Probabilistic analysis and robust optimization of the electric power systems; - Application of heuristic and mathematical-based optimization methods in the power system studies; - Automatic generation control system including different generation units and in presence of new devices such as FACTS, energy storage units, and renewable energy sources.
