Assheton Stewart Carter

Assheton is an expert and NED on responsible sourcing, sustainability standards, environmental markets, non-financial risk, and responsible investment. A track record of 30 years, with a focus on the resources sector and international supply chains of mining, metals, and gemstones; luxury; jewellery; auto and electronics OEM; and carbon. He is CEO of TDi Sustainability, the CEO of The Impact Facility, and serves on the boards of several standard-setting organisations, non-profit organisations, and private companies. Dr Carter is an expert on international conventions on human rights and environmental protection, corporate voluntary standard-setting and certification schemes, value-chain development from producer to product, and a minerals, gemstone, and metals industry expert. Past executive positions include head of risk and performance at Althelia Ecosphere, an impact-investing firm investing in REDD+ and climate change solutions; SVP at PACT, a leading international social development NGO; and Chief Advisor Business Practices at Conservation International, where he led strategy development and execution of the business engagement programmes. He has built many significant public private partnerships between business, environmental and development NGOs, the donor community and government agencies, including structured innovative ‘green’ supply chains for the first fully traceable gold and diamond jewellery for the world’s largest retailer, Walmart and the only tracking system for ‘conflict-free’ metals from the DRC. He advises government agencies on the implementation of international frameworks, such as the Kimberley Process and conflict minerals regulations, including the Belgium, UK, Mongolian, Sierra Leonean governments and the European Commission. He works with brand companies in Europe and the USA, including Amazon, Brilliant Earth, Bulgari, Cartier, Chopard, Dyson, LVMH, Kering, Swarovski, Tiffany, Van Cleef Arples, and with natural resource companies in Africa, Asia and Latin America, including Anglo American, Codelco, Gemfields, Goldlake, Muzo, Newmont, RioTinto, and Vale. He has published over 20 book chapters and articles and holds a Ph.D from the business school of the University of Bath. He speaks English and Spanish.
