Synthesis and characterization of organic proligands and coordination complexes; Common techniques used include: air sensitive organic and inorganic synthesis using standard Schlenk line techniques, microwave synthesis, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy (including near-IR detection), picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (solution and solid state) and time-correlated single-photon counting emission lifetime measurements. Some experience with: infrared spectroscopy, electrochemistry, powder X-ray diffraction, fluorescence microscopy and two-photon microscopy.

Synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as well as analytical testing of oxyanion contaminated water before and after treatment with MOF adsorbents; Common techniques used include: solvothermal synthesis, powder X-ray diffraction, N2, CO2 and Ar adsorption, inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy, microwave digestion, NMR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, supercritical CO2 drying, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy.
