Robotics Engineer @ Allonic

About

I’m a mechanical engineer who bridges technical rigor with a cultivated creative practice. Absorbing, processing, and creating art and design through observation, conversation, and ultimately integration directly shapes my engineering process; it expands how I observe problems and approach solutions. That creative perspective is why I specialize early in the R&D process. I use this approach to deeply understand complex problems, generate and visualize novel concepts, and develop elegant, sometimes unexpected solutions. My technical background spans 6 years of mechanical design and materials science across UBC and TU Delft, with specializations in biomimetics, compliant mechanisms, and polymer-matrix composites. During my studies, I spent 3 years on the Formula UBC racing team, moving from ergonomic design for driver controls to serving as Materials & Manufacturing Lead. I spent 12 months designing novel R&D equipment at Tesla's Cell Development Lab, and completed three capstone design projects, including a platform to assist mural artists on large-scale works and a programmable composite molding system.I bring hands-on fluency in building for scale and rapid prototyping with strength in parametric design, thermoplastic and thermoset additive manufacturing, CNC and manual machining, composite layup and design, and other shop essentials like welding, circuits, laser, and waterjet. I come ready-to-build, no instructions needed!I'm currently at Allonic, developing 3D braided compliant robotic manipulators and creating new joints and actuation systems across industries. Reach out if you'd like to build something together!

After two years serving as one of the general shop managers in the Integrated Engineering workshop, I took on the role of MECH Shop Area Owner. This role entails more responsibility, as ultimately the space and everyone in it are under my stewardship. This includes space renovations, tool maintenance, safety training (developing curriculum, teaching trainers, teaching students), project mentorship, procurement, documentation and budgeting for our MECH shop spaces.

As part of the teaching team for Applied Science 100 and 101, I had a wonderful time mentoring students through their engineering design projects throughout the 2024/25 academic year. I worked with student teams to guide their designs, offer academic and personal support, and share some of the experience I've had as a student engineer over the past 5 years. It was an immensely rewarding experience, and I'm excited to see the diverse paths all my students will take!

As one of five equipment engineers at Tesla's Cell Development Lab, I designed and deployed custom mechatronic solutions to improve yield, throughput, and manufacturing process ergonomics. My role focused on bridging the gap between complex analytical needs and user-centric hardware design. Product Design: Conceptualized and built a novel cell dissection analysis platform from the ground up (hardware & software), improving data fidelity and setting a new benchmark for dissection analysis. Scaling & Leadership: Led external vendors to scale this custom tooling for deployment across Tesla teams in the US. Human-Centric Engineering: Partnered with lab technicians to drive ergonomic design improvements across our cell manufacturing process, resulting in better user comfort and a 40% increase in process yield. Full Lifecycle Ownership: Managed projects from "napkin sketch" conceptualization through prototyping, manufacturing, deployment, documentation, and final user training.

As Subteam Co-Lead of the newly restructured Materials and Manufacturing team of Formula UBC, I lead a team of 6 dedicated students to support the rest of the team through offering materials and manufacturing process selection consultations, as well as a wide range of manufacturing services. Some of the machines that our subteam operates on a weekly basis include a Tormach 1100MX CNC mill, a 4'x4' CNC router, several SLA printers, Omax Waterjet cutters, a CO2 laser cutter, and MIG/TIG welders. I am also responsible for teaching and mentoring all my subteam members to become confident using all these machines independently, and for ensuring that all parts the rest of the team requests get manufactured on-time and within requirements. Finally, I am responsible for overseeing several materials engineering research projects (tensile tests, cure cycle testing, etc) seeking to characterize numerous materials and adhesives we are evaluating for use on our car!

We design, prototype, manufacture, and race a formula-style car every year, and my team is responsible for all systems which the driver interacts with. This year I have taken on pedalbox redesign/manufacturing and drive-by-wire implementation, along with drive-by-wire feature testing and implementation going forwards like engine modes, launch control, traction control, and live-adjusting brake balance. I've also designed and implemented brake rotor temperature sensing using high-temp resin printed housings, brake overtravel detection to address a potential sudden loss in brake pressure, and a 3d-scanned custom molded carbon fiber composite seat design. Through my involvement as a Driver Controls Member of Formula, I have vastly improved my FEA/simulation, project management, and metals + composites manufacturing skills while meeting amazing new people and working on projects I am passionate about!

At GluxKind I was one of four Mechanical Engineers responsible for the design and manufacture of a level 3 carbon fiber self-driving electric stroller prototype. In my role I was mainly responsible for overhauling the design of our push-assistive handlebar, which included extensive CAD, electrical packaging considerations, Design For Manufacturing using injection molding, Design for Assembly, as well as thermal management and stress simulation in the handlebar. I reduced the cross-sectional handle area by 35%, while increasing comfort and incorporating addressable LED bars for clear communication with the parent. I also conducted several bending and impact tests of carbon fiber tubing products, evaluating both layup schedules and comparing adhesives and adhesive curing strategies. I collaborated with our electrical team to redesign our handlebar PCB after modifying an earlier revision of our PCB to accommodate our new design direction. Finally, I modelled, textured, and rendered numerous animations and images of our stroller for website and marketing purposes, which can be seen here: https://gluxkind.com/
